Western Edge Macbeth Incursion

Deep Learning English students in Year 9 are studying the Shakespeare text 'Macbeth' this term. Last week they were fortunate enough to work with artists from Western Edge Youth Arts who performed scenes from Macbeth to help them understand the concepts and characters of the story. Thank you to these amazing performers for a fantastic incursion which all the students thoroughly enjoyed!

VCE Season of Excellence Excursion

On Friday 24th March, Year 10, 11, and 12 Extended Investigation students attended an excursion in the city. The day began by attending the VCE Season of Excellence: Top Talks event at the State Library of Victoria in the Conversation Quarter. The event showcases four oral presentations by high-achieving students in the subject from across the state. This oral presentation and defence of research is part of an external examination completed by Year 12 Extended Investigation students every year in October.

Following this event, students went to the University of Melbourne, where VUSC alumni Thea San Jose (Class of 2020) along with Cassandra Davidson and Zoe Beazley (Class of 2021) gave students a tour of the university before doing a Q&A with the students about their experiences studying their Bachelor degrees thus far and the opportunities they are pursuing in going on exchange as part of their studies this year.

As always, it was wonderful for current VUSC students to meet our alumni and hear about their journeys following Year 12. The day concluded with an afternoon session at the Kathleen Syme Library in which students worked on their own research projects they are undertaking this year.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

The Year 10, 11 and 12 Chinese language students made dumplings on 10th February to celebrate the Chinese New Year for 2023 (the year of the rabbit). They also helped with cooking dumplings for a staff morning tea at the senior campus. We wish everybody at VUSC community happy Chinese New Year and wish you happiness and prosperity (恭喜发财 Gōngxǐ fācái).

Dumplings, or jiǎo zi (饺子) in Chinese, are the most important course of the traditional Chinese New Year eve feast. Usually, families will sit around the dinner table and wrap dumplings together in the afternoon on Spring Festival eve. The reason Chinese people eat dumplings is because of their shape like the ancient silver & gold ingots which symbolize wealth. People say the more dumplings you eat during New Year time, the more money you will make next year. Moreover, eating dumplings during the Chinese Lunar New Year is a way to bring in good luck and fortune. Dumplings also represent togetherness and unity.
