Chinese Culture Day
Below are some photos and student reflections of the amazing Chinese Culture Day at the Junior Campus!
Monday the 27th of February was a day of Chinese culture experience. I have to say this was the most interesting, fun, and informative cultural schooling event I have experienced. Before I get into the actual events, I would like to thank the teachers and people involved with this, whom showed the amazing and epic features of Chinese culture. The first event my class and I did was the martial arts lesson. We learnt about the moves of Wing Chun which is a type of martial arts that even Bruce Lee learnt himself, speaking of the man himself at the end of this event we had a competition which involved having to put our determination to the test to win these awesome Bruce Lee keychains.
Up next was the art session where we got to make some of the traditional Chinese fans and learn about the history of these fans used by the people. Finally was the musical lesson in which we learnt a basic introduction to using the instrument of Guzheng. Our teacher for this lesson was an extremely talented player of the Guzheng, she taught us so much about it. Ultimately this experience of Chinese culture left us with a fresh understanding of the different cultures, fighting styles, art and music of China.

I’d first like to thank all the teachers and special guests on this day for such an amazing Chinese Culture Day today. I am really grateful to have this opportunity to take part in this wonderful event. I enjoyed all the activities including learning Chinese martial arts, fan making and playing traditional Chinese instruments. I believe that even in such a short time, we got a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture and traditions.
In the Chinese martial arts sessions, we got to learn more about Wing Chun, a famous Chinese martial art technique, and even got to learn some of the moves ourselves! In the fan making session, we were given the opportunity to design our own traditional Chinese fans, and gain more knowledge about these round-shaped fans. Additionally, we even got to learn and play a traditional Chinese instrument called Guzheng. Overall, these workshops and activities were all fun, enjoyable and engaging. While having such an exciting time, these workshops were also educational and gave us a better idea of Chinese Culture.

This term, the year 8 Chinese students were lucky enough to participate in a special event, “Chinese culture day” which was a day where we got to explore different Chinese cultural activities such as Chinese martial arts, designing traditional Chinese fans and learning a traditional Chinese instrument called “Guzheng.” In martial arts, students were engaged in learning self-defence skills which was taught by a professional martial arts teacher Anne Pang. All students gave their best go and were fascinated by the extraordinary movements that they learnt.
Students were also able to design their own traditional Chinese fans. Everyone displayed their artistic abilities as they designed their unique fans; some incorporated flowers, animals and Chinese phrases on to their fans. Lastly, students were introduced to a special instrument called Guzheng, which is also known as the Chinese plucked zither. I was mesmerized by the sound that came from the instrument as it is known to evoke a sense of elegance. My group members and I definitely enjoyed learning to play the instrument. Chinese culture day definitely gave students an opportunity to explore the vast and the extraordinary culture of China. All students enjoyed their time and had fun participating. Thank you to the teachers, staffs and guests for this amazing opportunity.

On Monday 27th February we had a Chinese culture day at VUSC for the year 8 Chinese classes to develop an understanding about our Chinese culture. Our wonderful Chinese teachers and guests were able to give their time for our Chinese classes by providing entertaining and appealing cultural activities like martial arts, fan design, and learning the guzheng.
First up we started off with martial arts and were taught by the legendary Anne Pang, an expert at the skill of martial arts that has developed a system of women’s self defence; she taught our classes how to use self-defence by punching, kicking and other martial arts skills. After martial arts we headed to our next activity which was fan designing. This is where we got a fan and drew a design on it. A lot of students learnt a lot more about fan designs and how special it is. For our very last session we got to learn how to play the guzheng otherwise known as the Chinese zither, a plucked string instrument with more than 2,500 years of history. Many people found it difficult to play, but everyone gave it a shot. Overall the day was very fun and we would all love to do it again.
