BOOK WEEK

Reading is my secret power

BOOK WEEK

Philosopher and author Alain de Botton wrote about children’s books, ‘They are friends waiting for us any time we want them and they will always speak honestly to us about what really matters. They are the perfect cure for loneliness. They can be our very closest friends.’ This Book Week turn off the computer, iPad and the TV, enjoy the silence and read.

This year’s Book Week also sees the launch of St Laurence’s Classic Book Collection. The collection consists of books gathered together from a list compiled by teachers and friends of St Laurence’s Librarian Margaret Gatehouse. Classic books are ones that have stood the test of time or are so well loved already, that they have become immediate modern day classics. ‘It has been a pleasure collecting these books. To see people’s faces as they go back in time to remember the people and animals who made up the stories from their childhood and in some way helped shape the people they have become. What an honour it has been to share those memories and to understand people a little better through the books that have become part of them.’ says Mrs Gatehouse.

Thank you to parents, friends and students for supporting the library and getting into the spirit of Book Week.   The school was well represented with superheros, wizards, princesses and fairies and a wide variety of our favourite book characters.

We are delighted that we were able to purchase about $500 of books for the library.
