Co-curricular - Senior Sport

Welcome back to Term 3, with fingers crossed the winter sport season gets into full swing.

As you are aware, this year’s Winter Sports Trials have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 situation and as such, the Government restrictions have been put in place. Despite this set-back, I take the time to thank the MIC’s and all coaching staff for working diligently to place boys in teams for the first round of fixtures this coming Saturday which in itself is treated as another trial opportunity.  In essence, these selections are for one week only and should not be seen as a definite placement for the entire season.

I wish all teams the best of luck for this Saturday and hope we compete with gusto.

I trust that you have all read the Director of Co-curricular’s article outlining the College protocols and procedures regarding sporting fixtures.

  • The Winter season is currently scheduled to commence this Saturday 25 July. The season is planned to run for 7 Rounds of fixtures concluding on the Saturday 5 September.
  • I wish to emphasise that No spectators are permitted to attend Senior School fixtures this Saturday 25 July irrespective of where the match is being played. Please take comfort in knowing that we are working diligently to allow the return of spectators in coming weeks.
  • It is important to note that each school will have their own set of protocols and procedures that will be communicated to both their own community and that of visiting schools on a weekly basis. Parents/carers and boys are asked to check Team App on a regular basis for this information.
  • Draft season draws can be found on the College website by visiting the Sporting page and clicking the Senior School season draw tab. Please note that some changes may occur and not all schools have supplied times and venues as yet. It will be updated regularly.

The Farrell Room has reopened this week to all boys from Years 5 to 12. Staff from the Complete Strength and Performance (CSP) team will resume operating the Farrell Room following NSW Government recommendation. Some of these protocols consist of:

  • 1 person per 4 square metres.
  • Students will wash hands before and after sessions – hand sanitiser available.
  • Maintain social distance of 1.5m.
  • Equipment must be cleaned after use – disinfectant wipes and spray will be available.
  • All students must log their name, homeroom and time they sign in and sign out.
  • Towel is mandatory – no towel, no entry.

Congratulations

We congratulate Alexander del Popolo of Year 11 and Jonathan Meaker of Year 10 who late last term were selected in the NSW 2020 Target Talent Athletics Program. Alexander was selected for his efforts in Javelin and Jonathan for his efforts in Middle Distance running.

Co-curricular Update

As most would be aware, boys commenced contact training towards the end of Term 3 and since that time several Rugby and Football teams have played holiday fixtures against teams from Barker, Cranbrook and Knox. Given our Senior and Junior sporting teams are scheduled to play this weekend, I thought it would be best to share the following information with the SPC community.

Sporting fixtures - protocols and procedures as at 20 July 2020:

  1. Team kits will include a pump pack of hand sanitiser.
  2. Each team will keep a log in which a roll is marked to record team members, coach/s and manager.
  3. Only one parent or carer may attend a Junior School fixture on Saturday 25 July irrespective of where the match is being played. The parent/carer will be asked to register their attendance by scanning a QR Code.
  4. No spectators are permitted to attend Senior School fixtures on Saturday 25 July irrespective of where the match is being played. This protocol may change in coming weeks.
  5. Sharing/exchanging of personal equipment, clothing or drink bottles is not permitted.
  6. Spectators (when permitted to attend) are requested to comply with social distancing guidelines and “Spectators Registration” instructions.
  7. Match ball(s) will be wiped over with sanitiser prior to and after each fixture.
  8. 'If in Doubt, Sit it Out' - any student, coach, official or parent/carer who has any cold or flu-like symptoms or has knowingly been in recent close contact with a person displaying said symptoms cannot attend any College Co-curricular event.
  9. Participants (including spectators and officials) who have visited Victoria in the past 14 days and/or those who have attended any of the reported case locations listed on the NSW Health website (https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates) are not to attend any Co-curricular activities.
  10. Toilet facilities will be available on match days. Changerooms may only be available to the First XV and First XI teams. As such, boys are to arrive at their fixture dressed in their match gear and College tracksuit. No other attire is to be worn.
  11. There won’t be any canteen/BBQ’s facilities operating for the foreseeable future.
  12. College Sport COVID-19 Officers will be placed at “home” venues on Saturdays to remind people of the clear expectations, not least of all registering their attendance and maintaining social distancing.
  13. Participants must be aware of and maintain proper hygiene measures:
  • Sanitise hands on arrival pre-warm up and then at the conclusion of the fixture prior to departure.
  • Do not put game equipment or your hands in your mouth. Should you need to touch your mouth you must wash and sanitise your hands first. If you need to touch your face, do so using the inside of your shirt with your finger covered by the outer side.
  • No shaking hands or contact outside of the rules of play is permitted before, during or after fixtures.
  • All visitors and providers (e.g. referees, external coaches, etc) must adhere to relevant hygiene, distancing and safety requirements.

It is important to note that each school will have their own set of protocols and procedures that will be communicated to both their own community and that of visiting schools on a weekly basis. Parents/carers and boys are asked to check Team App on a regular basis for this information.

I am also pleased to announce that a modified (shortened) season of Debating is scheduled to commence this week with our boys travelling to Santa Sabina for the Annual “Debate of Origin”. Many of the protocols and procedures outlined above will be in place when we host or travel to these debates. Importantly, the CSDA has determined that only team members, their coaches, MIC’s and Adjudicators can be in attendance. Given that, parents and boys are asked to make appropriate safe arrangements in regard to transportation to and from venues.

As indicated previously, there are a great number of staff who have been working behind the scenes in order to ensure our boys are afforded the opportunity to engage in their area/s of interest. We will plan as best we can in the knowledge that changes may need to be made on a week to week basis.

I trust you will all enjoy the season ahead.
