Is Your Child Getting Enough Sleep?

At school your child has had a busy day. They are continually learning and when in breaks moving around the playground, playing with friends. By the end of a day their bodies and minds need a break! Many of our students are tired and aren’t working to their full potential. Experts suggest that children aged between 5 and 12 years need 10-11 hours of sleep every night. When their bodies don’t get enough sleep the following things will happen:

  • Feel tired
  • Not think clearly
  • Become cranky
  • Can’t follow directions
  • Become clumsy in the playground or during PE and Sport lessons
  • Immune system declines

Sleep is an essential part of everyone’s routine and an indispensable part of a healthy lifestyle. ‘Studies have shown that kids who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behaviour, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and even depression’ (Dr Rachel Hawkins, MD).

Here are some tips to help your child sleep:

  • Try to go to bed at the same time every night
  • Have a calming routine eg. warm bath, reading – not on a device as it has been proven that the blue light from all screens effects brain activity
  • Limit sugary drinks or those with caffeine
  • Don’t put a TV in your child’s room
  • Don’t exercise just before bed – do this earlier in the afternoon

School Recycling Program

We are continuing our recycling program across the school. TerraCycle and Colgate® have partnered to create a free recycling program for oral care product packaging as well as a fundraising opportunity for participants. Any funds we raise will go to Catholic Mission. Program accepted waste includes: toothpaste tubes and caps, manual toothbrushes, electric toothbrush heads, toothbrush and toothpaste tube plastic packaging, floss containers. Please recycle your cardboard packaging in your kerbside recycling bin. Electronic toothbrush handles and bases are not recyclable through this program.

A bin will be placed in the front office where recyclables can be collected or students can bring them into their classrooms give them to their teachers for collection.
