Term 2 Week 6 Home Learning Snapshot

Home Learning

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our last week of home learning. We are excited to be returning to school but are very proud of the achievements of our Grade 2 learning community.

We would like to celebrate the great work done by students at home. We will be holding a home learning mini-exhibition on Friday of Week 7 (in our classrooms) so that students can share their work with their peers. Students can bring in their workbooks that they have used at home to share with their classmates and select some items for their portfolios.

Reading

This week the children will be continuing to learn and apply their researching and reading skills about water.

Writing

Children will choose an inquiry question related to our water unit to research into and write about, over the first four days of this week. Their question should be something that they wish to find out more about. They will present their findings on a poster. Would parents kindly assist by providing one large sheet of poster paper.

Students will create drafts based on their findings. They will edit and publish their writing, using the presentation ideas that they have recently learnt, such as, bullet points, paragraphs, titles, subheadings, illustrations, diagrams and labels.

The idea is to create a poster in collage style where they stick the final copies of their writing pieces on. The children will complete their poster on Thursday.

We will provide support in the way of website links, information texts in Epic, templates to write on, strategies to find the main idea, editing techniques and presentation layout ideas.

Write 2 Read

This week students will begin learning about our next rule: Gentle Cindy. This rule tells us that c and g can make their second sounds when they come before e, i or y. We'll be using our reading tools to help us with this rule. We'll also be continuing to learn our final codes so that we have worked through all 70, but we will continually practise and revise sets of these so that we continue to build our mastery and recall of  them all!

Maths

This week we are focusing on the connection between addition and subtraction. The learning intention is:

  • To recognise and explain the connection between addition and subtraction

On Monday this concept will be introduced using dominoes. Dominoes are a simple and visual way to represent addition and subtraction fact families.

On Tuesday, the students may select a worksheet. Some families have indicated that the Maths worksheets are more suitable than the hands-on tasks in a busy home learning environment. Decide what works best for your family and everyone’s well-being. You may choose to have your child choose one or two worksheets to complete over the rest of the week rather than work through the other tasks.

For the rest of the week, they will use their knowledge of addition, subtraction and fact families to solve addition and subtraction problems with a missing addend.

For students who would like extra Maths practise this week log into Mathletics or play the Number Fact Families online game.

UOI

This is our final week of our Unit of Inquiry into 'Using water responsibly supports life'. Students will demonstrate their understanding of responsible water use by choosing a 'project' to improve water use at home. Last week students' assessed their home's water use using a traffic light system. Students who gave themselves an orange or red colour may choose something at home that could be improved on. Students who rated their home's water use as green may still be able to find something at home that could be improved, or they could choose to try to persuade or educate someone else (eg. a relative or the public in general) to make their water use more responsible. They will work on taking this action during the week and create a text, video or poster to show what they did, to be shared with their teacher over Seesaw and their class when we return to school next week.

Wellbeing

It has been great to see so many students sharing their Zones of Regulation check-ins and including the whole family as well. We hope you will keep these conversations going if you found them helpful.

This week's reflections focus on gratitude and celebrating our achievements. Taking time to recognise and appreciate the positives around us is one strategy to develop a positive mindset.
