From the 5/6 Classrooms

Mathematical Olympiad

Did you know that BPPS has a Maths team?

In grades 5 and 6 you get the opportunity to try out for the team and test your maths skills against other schools in Victoria, Australia and even other countries.

This year our team have trained their brains on a weekly basis during maths problem solving classes and have had some great successes in the three competitions that they entered.

In the Australian Maths Olympiad the team ranked 21st out of all schools in Victoria across 5 different tests throughout the year.

Special mention goes to Marcus N, Yash J, Rosalind P, Kevin C, Helena C, Ajin H, Sally Z and Tim L who all placed in the top 10% of all students who competed.

An extra special mention goes to Yash who was our teams number 1 performer.

The team also entered 2 competitions run by the Australian Maths Trust.

The first competition was called computational and algorithmic thinking- it’s tricky enough to say let alone enter!

4 of our students were awarded distinctions in this competition. These were awarded to Warren L, Kouki T, Devon L and Tim L.

Congratulations to Devon and Tim who were joint top scorers and ranked equal 65th place out of 17532 students.

Finally the team also took part in The Australian Maths Competition.

Of the 17 students who sat this test 10 received a distinction.

Congratulations to Tim L who top scored for the school and placed in the top 4% of all students who took the test.

It was a great year for our maths team- so keep working hard and enjoying numbers and next year this could be you!
