Student Wellbeing and Engagement

Student Wellbeing and Engagement

This time of the year are festive feels as our MSC students and their teachers are getting ready for a refreshing Christmas break and quality time with their loved ones either traveling locally, regionally or internationally.  With many successes to count on after a global pandemic, we are thrilled to witness more successful engagement programs delivered this term.  We have particularly seen growth in many of our activation programs with attendance at the Movie Night exceeding 50 participants, who all enjoyed watching Shrek.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activities are big part of Melton Secondary College’s Strategic Plan to increase student wellbeing, school connectedness and engagement moving forward into 2023 and beyond.  Students connect well with their learning when they are happy and socially engaged with their peers in programs of choice that enrich their experience and make them ready to learn and engage with their peers.

The College community thanks staff members who have been involved in organising activities such as the movie night. We also thank parent and carers for their partnership and collaboration in ensuring their children partake in the school’s curricular and engagement activities.

Morning Basketball and Soccer Program for Sports, Leadership and Experience:

We have been witnessing strong and regular participation rate in the number of students participating in both the Morning Basketball and Melbourne Victory FC programs, as we continued witnessing positive engagement outcomes with students forming meaning peer relations, leadership development, enhancing their wellbeing and positive school connection.

Morning Basketball Program kicks off from 7.40am – 8.40am, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Melbourne Victory runs at recess, lunchtime and afterschool for juniors and seniors with shared afterschool leisure. Melbourne Victory FC (MVFC) has some wonderful summer holiday programs which are enclosed further in the piece offered free of charge funded by the DET of education in partnership with MVFC.

We’ll be endeavouring to improve both programs and other social emotional learning activities in 2023, especially for the two mentioned programs.

We will be incorporating more resources for Breakfast Club with assistance from Wellbeing Team to give student a kick start to their day with a positive outlook to their learning

A Melton Secondary School teacher has been named the AFL Victoria Secondary School Ambassador of the Year.

Robert Aduer was recognised for his efforts in helping to organise the TAC Unity Cup and helping it grow from catering to year 10 and 11 eleven students to also including grades seven and nine.

The TAC Unity Cup program is aimed at bringing together a host of different multicultural communities through the vehicle of Australian football.

The award was presented at the 2022 AFL Victoria Community Awards at Marvel Stadium on Friday, 14 October .

Mr Aduer said his main advice to his students is “always be good, and be involved.”

“I’m passionate about supporting young people, that’s what inspires me,” he said.

“I was supported as a young person by having great mentors and having a school community that valued diverse programs and programs that build the capacity of young people.

“Being honoured with that award in marvel stadium was frightening but it was also motivation, it shows how significant our work is for the community.”

Mr Aduer is not the only person from Melton Secondary involved with AFL community programs, he is also proud of his students who have been raising funds for flood relief as a part of the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s Youth Leadership Project.

Year nine students Emily Ellwood, Izabella Loades, and Tialla Wicker, and Montana Jones collectively raised $242.65 for the CFA by selling chocolate as a part of the program.
