Wellbeing

Positive Behaviours for Learning Focus

Respect means that you accept somebody for who they are, even when they're different from you or you don't agree with them. It is important to show respect at all times, when we are interacting with others, this includes interacting via use of technology. Respect in relationships builds feelings of trust, safety, and wellbeing. Respect is something we learn.

Over the next 4 weeks each learning group will be focussing on the following expectations from our PBL Matrix. These will be explicitly taught during Wellbeing Hour & revisited throughout the days.

It would be great if you could also reinforce these expectations at home and ask your child/children how they are following these at school.

At OLSC we shine when we show:

Respect:

  • We speak using appropriate words and tone
  • We use kind words and actions
  • We take and use photos or videos for learning only
  • We ask permission before taking photos or videos of another person

Responsibility

  • We take ownership of our choices
  • We hand our mobile phone in to our learning group teacher each day

Resilience:

  • We accept the consequences of our actions
  • We talk through our disagreements with others
  • We report anything that makes us feel
  • We let an adult know if we are feeling unsafe

Future Leaders at OLSC

On Friday October 28th all year 5 students were involved in a Leadership Day. The theme of the day was The Leader in Me.  The learning intentions for the day were to:

  • Define what a leader is
  • Recognise effective leaders in our lives
  • Identify the qualities, skills and behaviours of effective leaders
  • Identify our personal leadership skills and behaviours
  • Build resilience and leadership skills

We were most impressed with the way the students conducted themselves throughout the day and worked cooperatively together.

They worked in groups and  listed some impressive responses to the qualities & skills of effective leaders & composed a quote or motto about leadership.

Our 2022 school captains joined the Year 5's for a session and shared their thoughts on being student leaders at OLSC. Some excerpts of their words of wisdom include:

Applying for a student leadership position can be a bit daunting at first, but I'm here to tell you otherwise. When you are a student leader you get a clear understanding of responsibility...

A great thing about being a student leader is that it will give you a broader perspective on the way you act & speak to others, which will help you as you grow....

I have had a lot of chances to look at how the school works and have a direct say in what we do....

...you get to have active conversations & conferences with other students & people from different organisations.

The leadership position to me meant being a better leader and helping our school and anyone with anything. I was very passionate, and still am, about making our school a better place not only for students but for staff and guests that come to our school. My experience as school captain has been amazing....I loved to work on the garden because it showed our multicultural school.....There were times as a school captain that were a bit tough but those times challenged me to be a better leader & role model.... My best advice to future leaders is you can achieve what you believe.

It is fun to work with new & different people. ...Always be prepared...have strategies to calm yourself down before speaking...you have to act like a leader and role model...manage your time, have a balance between schoolwork & leadership work.

The final part of the day the students were led through the process of applying for the many student leadership positions for 2023. We look forward to reading their applications & feel confident we have many aspiring leaders in our midst.

Remembrance Day

Thank you to all the students & staff who purchased a poppy this week. It's wonderful that we can continue to support the Werribee Branch of the RSL. All money raised is used by the RSL to support returned soldiers and/or their families.

This year we have raised $154. Well done.

Family Disco

Our Parents and Friends group is up and running & have organised a Family Disco Night.

Let's finish off the year with a great social event not only for the kids but the parents too! Dance the night away with DJ Julius and his smoke and light machines. Snacks and drinks available for purchase.

This is a Family night & all students attending must have an adult with them.
