Humanities Report Term 2

This term in Humanities we have been focusing on History in Years 7-9. Year 7s have been learning about Ancient Egypt including the process and purpose of mummification (with lollies), how the pyramids were built and the role of pharaohs such as Tutankhamun in their civilisation.

Year 7 Pyramids made out of lollies!
Year 7 Pyramids made out of lollies!

Year 8 investigated medieval European History with a focus on the lessons we can learn from the plague in our understanding of the significance and effects of pandemics on societies. Year 9s had a focus on World War One History and the role Australia played in this conflict through the role of women, propaganda and the causes of the war.  Students have also learned to analyse primary and secondary sources with a focus on how to trust the information we find about the past – a valuable skill in our world of fake news.

In VCE our Business Management, Legal Studies, Economics and History classes have been working hard to complete the first unit in their courses as well as semester exam for Year 11s. We have been looking to incorporate more practical elements into our VCE courses with a visit to the Yakult Factory to learn more about operations in Business Management.

In Humanities we wish everyone a restful winter break and hope that we are all ready for term 3 where we will delve into business and economics with a focus on financial literacy and entrepreneurship in Years 7-9 Humanities.

Yakult Excursion – Year 12 Business Management

On Monday 29th May the Year 12 Business Management classes had the opportunity to visit the Yakult factory in Dandenong. Here we were able to see their production lines and learn about how the business operates. We saw how the business is able to produce Yakult on site for all of Australia and New Zealand. We also learned about how the business has grown and adapted to different markets internationally over the years. Where getting a first-hand understanding of how to operate a business was invaluable to our learning in the VCE course, and the free samples weren’t too bad either.

Don’t take it from me, here is what our students thought:

“Going to Yakult was a really fun excursion. We were able to see all the operations management strategies Yakult used. They told us specific materials management strategies such as using Just in Time, so resources are ordered and delivered just as needed. Moreover, they showed us how they minimise waste by making bottles out of recycled plastic.” – Maleesha

“The excursion taught me about how to be careful in running a successful business without leaving a major carbon footprint.” – Ali Reza

“During our excursion at Yakult I found that the tour was very educational and enjoyable. We got to see Yakult’s processes in action, enabling us to gain a better understanding of the business operations for our SAC.” - Ismeta

“The Yakult excursion was a good experience for me as you don’t always been to see how a business actually operates. I learned how automated production lines and robotics are implemented in manufacturing businesses.”

“It was a great experience at Yakult. I have never come here before, however Yakult surprised me because of its organisation and beautiful buildings. At Yakult, I discovered a lot of interesting information about business operations, how efficiently and effectively they create their milk drink and what they do to ensure it is a safe product. This experience helped me to get a really high score in my SAC!” – Hanna

“The good thing about the Yakult excursion was the free Yakult! Also, the fact that we got to see how the processes occur, rather than just imagining it. I also learned about the safety requirements that need to be met in order for the Yakult to be safe to consume.” – Bhoomika

“It was good to get some visuals of everything we have learned so far in class.” – Lara

“I really enjoyed seeing the whole manufacturing process in action and found the story behind the creation of Yakult very sincere as it was made to improve people’s health. Getting to drink a free Yakult was also nice, because I understood the different processes needed to make it after watching it all before me. I learnt the importance of effective operations management and how crucial it is for a business to be efficient in what they do to achieve this.” – Zaryab

Harmony day is an event that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. Students dressed up in cultural costumes and colours and at lunchtime the school community came together for a joyful parade showcasing the wonderful cultures of students represented at Lyndale. A fantastic day celebrating cultural diversity at LSC. Thank you to all who participated and helped to make the day a success!
