English

Phonics:

Through our daily phonics lessons, the Prep students will continue to build their knowledge of letter/sound combinations. Students will revise their initial single letter sounds, common digraphs, silent e, and open and closed syllables. Students will delve into spelling rules k/ck, tch/ch, dge/ge and Gentle Cindy.

Reading:

Our reading approach caters to all components of reading - phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students will engage in weekly lessons that will allow them to apply their letter/sound knowledge to read appropriate decodable texts. We utilise well chosen texts that also promote fluency development. Our Term Three Core Knowledge Units are titled Farms and  Kings and Queens. These units are rich in language and content, which support students in building their worldly knowledge as well as promote the use of rich vocabulary. These units are also used to support students' oral comprehension development.

Writing:

Our writing lessons are taught explicitly and sequentially. Students are engaged in a range of guided and independent writing opportunities. This term our focus is on students using their letter/sound knowledge to write words as well as building their confidence to attempt the spelling of unknown words by making appropriate spelling choices. A heavy focus remains on sentence syntax, the arrangements of words in sentences. Students will also build on their sentence writing by adding conjunctions ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’.

Mathematics

Throughout Term Three we will cover the following units.

Addition & Subtraction:

Students will represent practical situations to model addition and subtraction. They will compare, order and make correspondences between collections, initially to 20, and explain reasoning.

2D & 3D shapes:

Students will sort, describe and name familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects in the environment.

Length:

Students will use direct and indirect comparisons to compare items and decide which is longer, taller, smaller or shorter and explain their reasoning using everyday language.

Chance & Data:

Students in Prep will answer yes/no questions as a means of collecting formation. They will organise their results in simple displays using objects and drawings and interpret the data displays by answering questions.

Show and Share

This Semester in Prep, students will be participating in Show and Share. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their public speaking and social skills. They present in front of their peers (with the support of the classroom teacher if needed) and answer follow up questions after their presentation.

Each Prep class will have it’s own ‘Class Pet’ and the students will create the name altogether. Following the roll order, every Friday a student will take the pet home and have the weekend to show the pet their life and take them around. A book will also be sent home for photos to be stuck into that students can refer to during their Show & Share.

On the following Monday, the students will return the pet and will present during Show & Share. We will continue this until all students have had the opportunity to Show & Share their time with the class pet.

If all students are not able to present during Semester 1, they will have the opportunity to do so at the beginning of Semester 2. Show & Share will run for Semester 1 only with the exception of any students needing to present in Semester 2.
