READING

Across this term we will be continuing with the structured literacy approach in our classrooms. As previously mentioned, there are five essential and interdependent components of effective, evidence-based reading instruction that we follow at St Joseph’s in Prep, Year One and Two. Each morning between 9-9:30am we begin the day with explicit phonics and spelling instruction through MSL. Some students attend Spelling Mastery in other classrooms at this time.

These 5 components are taught consistently through the weekly lessons.

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension

Additionally, the students work with the teacher in guided reading groups at their level to develop their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.

WRITING

Writing begins with work related to basic sentence level and builds onto the construction of various text types. In addition, students are explicitly taught grammar and punctuation when writing sentences. This term we will continue to focus on learning how to construct a variety of genres such as narrative, procedural and information reports.

HOME READERS Your child will bring home a text to read aloud to you every night. Please enter the title and

sign the diary each night and place it back into the blue book bag. The majority of the books are

decodable texts and you can encourage your child to sound out each phoneme (single sounds) as they encounter more difficult words.

If there is time, ask your child a couple of key questions about the text as this helps them to develop their comprehension (understanding) of the text that they are reading.

  • What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?
  • Who was in the story?
  • What was the problem in the story?

  • Number and Algebra - Place Value
  • Measurement and Geometry - 2D Shapes and 3D Objects
