Homework & Readers
Thank you again for all of your efforts in completing Homework in first Semester. At St Joseph’s, homework is offline and consists of a weekly Mathematics and Literacy activity. Please let us know if there are any questions, as we are more than happy to go through any misconceptions during our Homework correcting sessions. Alongside homework, children are expected to complete their reading each night and record this in their reading journals. If your child is reading chapter books, they are able to select from the tubs, library or books they have at home. Please ensure you fill in the page numbers/chapters. Reading journals are to be brought to school daily and will be signed on a Friday! | Mathematics
Throughout Term 3 we will cover the following topics:
|
English Reading
Along with Spelling/MSL, the teacher will work with guided reading groups to develop their decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. Each Reading lesson will consist of the teacher modelling an explicit reading skill (e.g. answering retrieval questions) and children will then complete an independent task where they will practise this skill. To complement our current Writing unit, we will begin by looking at a range of persuasive texts and discuss their purpose and features.
Writing
Writing is taught explicitly and sequentially in the lessons. It begins at the basic sentence level and builds to the construction of narratives, reports and expositions. This term we will begin by focusing on persuasive writing. The children will look at different topics and create arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’. We will also introduce some persuasive techniques, such as rhetorical questions, list of 3 and alliteration. Towards the end of the term, we will continue to build on our narrative writing, incorporating a variety of features (such as similes and dialogue) and vocabulary.
Home Readers The children are to change their readers daily (unless reading chapter books) to ensure they are practising their sounds and fluency at home. We frequently monitor their reading progress and journals to ensure they are taking home appropriate readers. We also make an effort to celebrate their reading efforts, particularly with the ‘milestone’ certificates and stickers in their journals. Reading journals are signed on a Friday! Please feel free to leave any comments in their reading journals regarding their reading. | |
