On Wednesday 31st May we had 6 students represent the school at Division Cross Country at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham. It was a cold day however that did not stop out runners from giving it their all.

Well done Ava T, Madalee W, Chase V & Elliot F on being superstars and trying your best.

A huge congratulations to Sophie A (1st - 9/10 yr girls ) and Lara A (2nd - 12/13 yr girls). They have qualified to attend the Regional event on Wednesday 14th June, we know you will give it your all!

Junior School

Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students have completed the Cricket Australia Mascot Challenge activities throughout P.E as part of their throwing and catching unit. These quick 10 minute warm ups have allowed students to progress at different stages and experiment with various ball sizes. The students have been working on their underarm and overarm throwing techniques independently with the aim to progress to partner work and minor team based throwing and catching challenges later in the term.

Middle School

Year 3 students have been honing their throwing and catching skills in a variety of minor games. Students have been given the opportunity to trial different throwing methods using a variety of equipment, not just balls. They have continued to work on their decision making skills with an emphasis on strategy and throwing towards a moving target.

Senior School

As part of funding through the Sporting Schools grants all year 4, 5 and 6 students have taken part in a four week basketball program. This program was facilitated through Casey Basketball with numerous accredited coaches coming and running clinics with each class. We were also fortunate enough to have one of the Casey Cavaliers American imports Lauren Van Kleunen attend numerous sessions.

These sessions allowed all students the ability to engage in skills based at their level with a gradual progression each week. All students are to be congratulated on the way they engaged with their peers and the coaches.

Social Wellbeing

Foundation

The Foundation students have been discussing strategies when they have a fight in the yard, and also how our bodies have changed from when we were babies to now we are at school.

Years 1 and 2

The year 1 and 2 students have also been discussing Conflict and the importance of keeping a calm voice when talking to their friends and that it's ok to compromise what you want to play. We then made posters promoting kindness and Respect.

Years 3 and 4

The year 3 and 4 students have been talking about the importance of a growth mindset and persisting through a challenge. When we have a growth Mindset we rise to a challenge and push ourselves to keep trying. They were given a collection of 3 minute challenges such as balancing on 1 leg, making different tangram pictures and clapping non stop.

Years 5 and 6

The year 5 and 6 students have been discussing solving conflict with respect and the importance of talking through the situation. It's important that we express how we are felling, why we are feeling this way, and what we need from the other person to be able to move forward. We've looked at different scenarios the students may be faced with and what are positive ways and harmful ways to handle those situations.

Through all the Conflict talks, we have been looking at Cranbourne South Primary's Prevention 4. All students are also taking part of these lessons in their classroom, it is a process to provide the students with strategies which includes asking the student to Stop what they are doing that is upsetting us. Walking away to take some space to calm down and getting a yard duty teacher if necessary and checking in with their zone of regulation and choosing a strategy.

Artistic Flair

Artistic Flair

For Reconciliation week, all students listened to a traditional Aboriginal Welcome to Country song and learned about the difference between an Acknowledgement of Country and a Welcome song. They learned about the special dances and celebrations indigenous people use at special events like the football or concerts and shared their thoughts about why these events may be special to indigenous and non-indigenous communities.

Foundation

Foundation students have enjoyed their fortnightly visits from Mary at the Song Room and experimenting with the new equipment that has just arrived! They have enjoyed playing music and movement games and practising moving their bodies in time with the beat. They have also learned how words have rhythms and created their own fruit salad rhythms. Students particularly enjoyed shaking their 'shaker egg' to the music.

Junior School

Year 1 and 2 students have explored how words can have a rhythm and used the names of fruits to make their own fruit salad rhythm. They then rehearsed and performed their rhythms to the class using claves.

Middle School

Year 3 and 4 students have enjoyed learning about basic notation and can play a 4 beat rhythm. They experimented with long and short sounds and played various instruments to combine long and short sounds to make a rhythm. They also played a group game where they used the words 'boots' and 'cats' to establish a beat.

Senior School

Year 5 and 6 students have been using Musicca online to experiment with creating their own beat and rhythm with the online drum machine. They have learnt how to read simple notation and play a 4 beat rhythm using percussion instruments. They are learning to identify the beat and rhythm and play them simultaneously in a small group. Students enjoyed the competition we played as a whole class passing the 'beat' around the room.

Environmental Studies

Foundation, Years 1 and 2

The Foundation, year 1 and year 2 students have been heading across the road for their nature excursions. The students have enjoyed following the water courses and exploring the bushes, we have seen lots of interesting things  like fungi, rabbits and possibly (not sure) a Southern Brown Bandicoot.

Year 3 and 4

The year 3 students have excelled with their knife skills, learning how to dice and julienne. Over the last few weeks the students have made vegetable pasties and sushi which are both very simple and healthy snacks.  I would also like to say a big thank you to Lyn, Lyn and Michelle who have been helping us out in the kitchen, their help is invaluable.

 Year 5 and 6

The year 5 and 6 students have started their unit on water and pollution. Students have conducted experiments into water filtration and how human activity influences water quality.

As part of National Reconciliation Week students in years F to 4 decorated gum leaves to make and indigenous wreath. A big thank you to Mrs Mills and Mrs B for helping the student's with this. The year 5 and 6 students have been learning all about what an Acknowledgment of Country is, so they can then create one of their own.
