Junior School Visual Arts
During the first lesson in Term 1, all Junior School students created self-portraits in monochromatic colours, to create a colourful collaborative display presented alongside the words Each one of us is a beautiful work of art, but together we are a true masterpiece. The children have loved seeing themselves represented on the wall and trying to spot their friends or guess who the portraits belong to.
Prep students have been focusing on line and pattern in their drawing units and have been inspired by Folk Art and Indigenous Art to create some Hot Drink Drawings and Eagle Feathers. They have loved painting on bubble wrap to explore printmaking and following guided instructions to draw a realistic looking bee, which will be combined to create a Honeycomb Cell.
Year 1 and 2 students have been inspired by the rainforest work of Henri Rousseau to create some beautiful and bright Colourful Toucan drawings. They have also looked at the history of Chinese pottery and drawn designs on handmade symmetrical paper vases to represent cobalt porcelain created during the Ming Dynasty in China.
Year 3 and 4 have worked hard to produce some amazing indigenous inspired collages that tell a story. They adopted elements of x-ray art to decorate their Australian animals and combined natural and man-made materials to create a background for them. They are currently excited about learning basic sewing skills to hand-sew their very own Emoji Pillow which will be completed early next term.
Year 5 and 6 students began the term studying Street Art and learning to do graffiti style block lettering. They sponge-painted a brick background and chose a word to draw, colour and overlay onto the bricks, focusing on colour and value. They then moved onto creating Zentangles, a mini abstract work of art, in preparation for their Zentangle Zoo artwork, which will combine a freehand drawing of an animal with zentangle patterns.
We look forward to completing our current projects and moving onto new ones in Term 2. Don’t forget to visit during Open Day to view some of your children’s amazing artwork on display!
