What Did You Do At School?
Prep
We have had a SUPER time in Prep. Each week we have been participating in a writing experience. This event acts as a stimulus to inspire our recount writing. We LOVED making Milo and drinking it with our friends. The Milo tasted sweet and delicious!
Another highlight was spending quality time with our incredible Year 6 buddies. We enjoyed learning about our buddy’s favourite things and telling them all about us! I wonder what exciting things will happen in Term 2?
Year 1
Sharing is caring…
Over the past few weeks we have enjoyed some time meeting and sharing with our Buddies. This year, we have two sets of Buddies, a set in Year 9 and another set in Year 3. We are very blessed to be loved by so many people. During their visit, with each set of Buddies, we completed a survey to find out about each other.
We also had our photo taken with our Year 3 Buddies which will become part of our Portfolio. The highlight for this term was meeting with our Year 3 Buddies and having lunch with them at the Easter Picnic. During this time, we made and decorated Easter baskets and through stories and play we were reminded of Jesus’ death and resurrection and the significance this is for us as Christians.
Year 2
We have been hard at work rehearsing for our open strings lesson. We are so excited to show our parents all the hard work we’ve been doing on the cello, violin and viola. We also have been building precincts in our Integrated Studies and showing how we can build sustainably for the future. We’ve learnt how solar panels, insulation and water tanks can help save our environment and our money. What a blessed term we have had in Term 1. We can’t wait to see what happens in Term 2!
Year 3
Term 1 has been amazing! We got to meet our new teachers, make new friends, meet our Year 1 Buddies, participate in our first Year 3-6 Athletics, and go on an excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance and the Melbourne Museum. Our teachers were so proud of us for completing our first NAPLAN with so much courage and perseverance. Term 1 has been busy, but we have had a phenomenal start to Year 3. We can’t wait to see what Term 2 has in store for us!
Year 4
To finish our Integrated Studies unit, we went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum and the Shrine of Remembrance. At the Museum, we explored the First Peoples exhibit where we were able to see many examples of indigenous artefacts, many of which we had researched over the last few weeks. We then explored the Milarri garden which is full of indigenous plants. After lunch, we hopped back on the bus for a short trip to the Shrine of Remembrance. We were privileged to have several volunteers take us around the Shrine and share the stories of the exhibits. We tried on replica uniforms from World War I and reflected on the sacrifice many people had made in the past for our country. It was a very special experience that helped us better understand Australia’s contribution to war.
Year 5
In Week 6, we travelled to Canberra as part of our studies Making Democracy. We participated in tours of the Royal Australian Mint, Old Parliament House, Questacon and many more. We were also able to visit Parliament House where we sat in the viewing areas for both the House of Representatives and the Senate. During our time at Parliament House, we were able to meet the MP for Casey, Aaron Violi. We were interested to discover that Aaron Violi’s wife went to Oxley as a student!
We are proud too because at each place we visited we were told how well behaved and respectful we were as a group. We look forward to our next camp!
Year 6
Camp Reflection by Mia and Lincoln 6G
After much anticipation, we experienced many new and exciting events during our week in Canberra. There were so many great things to do there! We had an excellent time exploring and learning about how the Australian Government works. It was amazing to see real politicians at work in the House of Representatives and to meet our local MP, Mr Aaron Violi.
We learnt about how Canberra was established. It was very interesting to discover that Canberra’s appearance (what it looks like today), was created through a designing competition. We went to many different places and learnt about the origin of the territory. The most exciting places we went to were Parliament House and the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport).
At the Mount Stromlo Observatory, we saw the moon and Orion’s Belt through an extremely big telescope. It was really fun seeing them close up. Who knew the moon had so many craters?
The War Memorial was so cool. We saw fighter jets, tanks, the enigma machine, clothes, paintings, the reflection pool and the eternal flame. The Wall of Heroes has every Australian soldier who died in the war.
It was so much fun having our own cabins, taking care of our belongings and keeping the cabins clean with our friends.
Overall Canberra is an amazing place and there are lots of things to do, so you will never get bored!
The Australian Government contributed funding to the College equivalent to $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program, to cover costs involved in the program.
