DAV Schools Competition: Round 2 Report

Congratulations to our Year 9 to 12 debaters on an outstanding second round of the DAV Schools Competition on the 23rd of March!  It was a challenging second round, with students only having only a week to prepare due to disruptions with camp week and so many other school activities happening at the same time. The topics for round 2 were:

  • A Grade: That we regret the rise of Artificial Intelligence
  • B Grade: That we should ban political donations
  • C Grade: That students have to complete compulsory volunteering hours every year
  • D Grade: That we should ban uranium mining in Australia

Well done to all our teams on a wonderful continuation of the year. We are super excited to announce that we had a clean sweep of D Grade, with all of our D Graders winning their debates this round. Impressive! Huntingtower also had 10 out of 15 teams win this round which is undoubtably a commendable achievement! Well done to everyone who debated last round and the effort every single team put in to prepare their case.

We would also like to congratulate to students who were named ‘best speaker’ in their debates by their adjudicator:

  • Eleni M (Year 12)
  • Nicholas T (Year 11)
  • Liana C (Year 10)
  • Alexis F (Year 9)
  • Isabella W (Year 9)
  • Hitani C (Year 9)
  • Jade C (Year 9)

Well done everyone on an amazing effort!

Good luck to all teams for the next round (11th May), especially to our A, B and C graders who have their first secret topic debate of the season.

All the very best!

DAV Women’s Competition Report

The Women’s DAV debating competition was an amazing experience that stood out for its difference from other competitions, mainly because you don’t know your team members until the actual day. One the day we met other girls from years 9 to 12 from other schools from around Melbourne, where we formed teams of thee to do three secret topic debates, with every member of each team coming from a different school.

We both really enjoyed meeting the other girls, and getting practise with three-versus-three secret topics. We also had some good results, with one of our teams undefeated and one winning two-out-of-three debates, and we both were best speakers in our final debates. Meeting the other girls and learning off one another was really helpful to improve our debating skills not only as the day progressed, but also hopefully helping us with other competitions to come. We both look forward to competing again next year.
