Mrs Rachael Lo Ricco

April

We have had another month of rich Mathematics here at St Michael’s.

Maths at Home

Some suggestions for starting conversations within families are:

  • Play a game. Notice and talk about strategies. Notice and talk about where maths is used
  • List how you use mathematics on a typical day (when you go shopping, cook, clean)
  • Name something you did today that did not involve maths. See if you can Identify the mathematics in that action/activity
  • Ask your child to explain some maths they are doing at school and talk about the way that you did that same thing when you were at school

What you will need:

Each player needs a whiteboard or paper and markers.

How to Play:

  • Each player writes down 5 three digit numbers and reads them aloud (100-999).
  • Without looking at the player's numbers, the caller says a digit and a place value column, e.g. "5 in the tens column", "9 in the ones column", "1 in the hundreds column".
  • The caller should write down what they say to keep track.
  • Players cross out their digits as they're called out.
  • The first player to cross out all 5 complete numbers is the winner.

Extend the game by using more places in the place value chart
