NORTHERN MALLEE HORTICULTURE IMERSION (NMHI) PROJECT

Northern Mallee Horticulture Immersion (NMHI) Project

The NMHI Project is an initiative led by Northern Mallee LLEN, community organisations, and industry. It is funded by the Secondary School Agriculture Fund (SSAF) which forms part of the Victorian Government's $50 million commitment over four years to the Agriculture College Modernisation Program (ACMP). The program is designed to develop an awareness of local jobs and new industry technologies in the horticulture industry.

We had 7 students from Red Cliffs Secondary College representing our school as part of Group 1 of the project. These students attended the NMHI Project each Friday for 9 weeks. They participated in a range of learning activities including experiments with growing tomato plants at Chaffey Secondary College Farm, soil testing, OH&S training, farm machinery and technology, tertiary education and career pathways, and much more! Students also went on industry visits to Select Harvests Piangil Farm, Select Harvests Processing Facility, Agromillora Australia, SuniTAFE SMART Farm and Southern Cross Farms.

Well done to the following Year 9 students who participated in Group 1 of the NMHI Project:

  • Nadia Cohrs
  • Art Faulkhead
  • Rodolfo Gallardo
  • Charlie Goldup
  • Ashton Gowers
  • Brodie Millhouse
  • Noah Staley

Group 2 is starting this week and consists of some more eager students with an interest in agriculture and horticulture. We hope they enjoy their time and get the most out of the experience. We would like to thank the NMLLEN and Chaffey Secondary College for facilitating this exciting program!

The NMHI Project will be running again in Term 3 for a third group. If you are in Years 9-12 and might be interested, please talk to your Science teacher to find out more and let Miss Wilson know before the end of the term.
