Highlighting 7J

Continuing with their strong work ethic and flourishing social connections, 7J have made a fantastic start to Term 2. This class consistently demonstrates their amazing ability to work with a range of people within their class, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected. In starting life at secondary school, 7J have approached their classroom environment as one like a sports team – they have each other’s backs, they rally around one another when someone needs help, and they try to work together for a common goal.

Maths

In Maths so far this year, 7J have been working on consolidating their number strategies when solving more complex equations.

Towards the end of the Term 1, students worked on designing their own food truck. This project allowed students to demonstrate their understanding of finance as well as measurement and geometry.  It's fair to say that the students loved this project and loved the real-life application of Math skills.

This term, students are working on exploring real life statistics and probability. Their assessment will get students to explore how much time they spend on social media, and then produce this data alongside other relevant statistics as an infographic poster.

English

In English this term, students are building on their reading skills by engaging with a variety of text types.

Students will continue to work in groups as part of their author study unit on Margaret Wild. As part of this work, students are looking at how images and colours can help the reader understand the themes and symbolism within these picture story books.

Additionally, students have been a part of a book club group, where they are studying their chosen text. Students have used ‘thinkmarks’ to help actively engage with the book by asking questions, identifying connections, highlighting character traits, as well as exploring themes.

The work that the students engage with throughout this term will be the foundation to deeper text analysis that will take place throughout their middle and senior schooling.

Art

Throughout Semester 1 7J have been drawing with a focus on line and tone. For line, illusion was the desired outcome. For tone, depiction of an animal or insect. For the remainder of the semester they will be glazing their coil clay vessels that are currently being bisque fired, and then completing an oil pastel picture with a focus on texture.

Humanities

7J have been busy studying Ancient Egypt this term. After creating timelines to orient themselves about which period in History they are studying, students learnt about the climate, physical features and social hierarchies, along with significant Pharaohs.

This week, 7J have been focusing on the Ancient Egyptian Gods. Students gained an understanding about the many different Gods the Ancient Egyptians worshipped, as well as the ways in which they worshipped them. They then used this knowledge to create their own Ancient Egyptian Gods – with a modern twist!

Systems

Term 2 has been a very short and sharp learning program for our year 7 cohort due to the looming semester changeover.

The students of 7J have completed an incredible amount of practical study, finishing both required circuits, and the foundation theory associated with understanding electronics circuitry.

The behaviour of 7J has also been of a high standard for the duration of the term.

Homework Club

Homework club has started for Term 2 in the Senior building. This is open for ALL students at the college.

Homework club is a terrific opportunity for students to both catch up or get ahead in work. Students are offered the opportunity to work in small groups with other students or have one on one tutoring with their teachers, or other teachers from our College.

If you are interested speak with your teachers and let them know when you are looking to attend or go to the Senior building on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

Homework club runs from 3.20 pm to 5.00 pm and students are free to arrive and leave as they need. Fresh baked afternoon tea is provided on Thursdays by the VCE Vocational Major students.
