Budding future female engineers

Our Year 10 STEM elective is off and running with students learning about the basics of structural engineering. The students have learnt that triangles and columns are strong shapes dues to their ability to distribute the load applied to them—this is why we see these shapes in all of the structures that surround us including houses, bridges and even rollercoasters!

In their first lesson, the students were challenged to use this knowledge to build a structure to support as much load as possible. As an added challenge, they had some constraints, such as the amount and type of materials that could be used, and the time allowed to plan and build their structure. The students rose to the challenge and showed great ingenuity in their designs. A great start to the year ahead!

We will be expanding on this further in the next few lessons, with the students building truss bridges.

Commissioning and Belling-In

Last Wednesday 16 February, the College celebrated the commissioning of our Year 12 leaders into the school year.

Following a Liturgy in the Cathedral, the Year 12s, new Kinders and all new students were warmly welcomed into the St Mary's College community with our traditional Belling-In ceremony.

Steeped in tradition, the Belling-In is a wonderful example of our community living out one of our Presentation touchstones, Hospitality.

Many cheers and high fives were exchanged as the students made their way through a student and staff guard of honour while the convent bell tolled in the background.

Nagle coronation

Congratulations to Mia Smith (Year 12), who was officially crowned Nagle House leader this morning in a ceremony fit for a queen! Well done, Mia—we know you will wear your green cape with pride.

Kinder smiles for miles

If you picked up a copy of the latest issue of the Catholic Standard newspaper, you would have seen our very own Kinders, Zoe, Emma and Ivy on the front page!

The photo was taken in the lead up to Term 1, 2022 and the girls were very excited to wear their brand new school uniform for the first time ahead of their first day of Kinder at St Mary's College.
