Diocesan Touch

Touch Diocesan Day

On Thursday 16 March Mater Dei Catholic College took 4 teams to the Diocesan Touch trials at Jubilee Park. The results were very pleasing with the Opens Girls being undefeated and did not have 1 try scored against them all day. The 15’s girls came 2nd after losing to Kildare Catholic College. The Opens boys had 2 losses and 2 wins and the 15’s boys also came 2nd only losing to KCC.

Congratulations to the following students on their selection into the team or squad or as a shadow: Vienna Randal, Cleo Randal, Gab O’Connell, Mikaela Cole, Molly Geale, Hannah Hurst, Tom Butt, Lachlan Johnson, Josh Connellan, Connor Quade, Corey Toole and Theo Heinjus, Phoebe Duncombe, Janai Footman, Tilly Vearing, Jessica Wendt, Ashley Reynoldson, Breanna Wendt, Lucy McIntyre, Tristan Wheeler, Wilson Hamblin, Ryan Bourne, Cooper Stormonth.

Thank you to parents Cath Salmon and Stephen Johnson and teachers Matt Hope and Virginia Baggio for coaching the teams on the day.

The Opens Girls Touch team had the opportunity to train with Alicia Quirk on Wednesday 22 March. She helped them with some line defense and line attack before the CWWHSSA Preston Butcher Touch grand final. They also had the opportunity to hold her gold medal and chat with Alicia.

The girls then played in the Grand Final of the Preston Butcher Cup on Tuesday 28 March at Paramore park against Kildare Catholic College. The team consisted of Year 7-12 students and they played against Wagga High School and TRAC in the round games and semis to progress into the Grand Final. This was the first time the girls have made it into the Grand Final and they should be congratulated on such an amazing effort throughout the competition. The girls played hard in the Grand Final but were defeated 5-1.

Thank you to the staff and parents who supported the team over the last 5 weeks and to Cath Salmon and Lachlan Johnson for refereeing. Thank you to Miss Georgina Leahy and Mrs Virginia Baggio for coaching the girls.
