Japanese Encephalitis

(JE) virus is a rare but potentially serious infection of the brain caused by a virus spread to humans through bites from infected mosquitoes.

The virus has been detected in pigs and several people in Victoria near the Murray River and areas close to the border of New South Wales.

While the overall risk is low, some mosquitoes carry diseases that make you sick.

Protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne disease

Summer can mean more mosquito biting and breeding, including the ones that can carry diseases that make you sick.

Your only protection against mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry is to avoid mozzie bites.

  • Mozzies can bite through tight clothing. Cover up - wear long, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Use mosquito repellents containing picaridin or DEET on all exposed skin.
  • Limit outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are about.
  • Remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed around your home or campsite.
  • On holidays make sure your accommodation is fitted with mosquito netting or screens.
  • Use ’knockdown’ fly spray, mosquito coils or plug-in repellent where you gather to sit or eat outdoors.
  • Don’t forget the kids – always check the insect repellent label. On babies, you might need to spray or rub repellent on their clothes instead of their skin. Avoid applying repellent to the hands of babies or young children.

Where to get help

Monash University - masters of counselling students.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are fortunate to have two masters of counselling Monash University students working with us soon at CJC.

We have had students from Monash working with students in the past and they have been excellent.

They will be starting sessions with students in 2 weeks.

If you feel your child would benefit from regular sessions with one of these counsellors please contact your classroom teacher or myself to get a consent form.

Catherine and Shuen are very much looking forward to working with CJC students and have attached some information about themselves.

Kind regards,

Dear Parents and Guardians,

"I am currently completing a Master of Counselling at Monash University and I am delighted to have been offered a Professional Experience Placement opportunity at Caulfield Junior College. I will be working with the CJC staff to support children presenting with a range of personal, social, and emotional difficulties including anxiety, emotional regulation, and friendship concerns. Counselling will be tailored to each child’s specific needs using techniques that aim to encourage each child to use their own resources to overcome difficulties. I am registered as a student member of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and abide by the organisations’ codes of ethics.

I am a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist with a special interest in childhood anxiety and paediatric medical trauma. Prior to studying medicine, I completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) with a major in French language and literature. I have a passion for the French language and strive to maintain and improve my language skills. I obtained the Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française Niveau B2 (DELF B2) certification in 2015. In 2020 I obtained a Master of Arts (French Studies) through the University of New England.

Please contact Shauna Sanderson or your child’s classroom teacher if you would like to utilise my counselling service at Caulfield Junior College."

Dear Parents and Guardians,

"My name is Shuen Ho and am currently a Master of Counselling student studying at Monash University. I have been given the opportunity to complete my placement at Caulfield Junior College in 2022, and very much look forward to meeting students, parents, and staff at CJC.

I will be providing support and counselling to students having a difficult time with anxiety, stress, emotional regulation, friendships, bullying, family relationships, and other possible issues which students need additional support to navigate. Such support can include introducing new coping strategies that students can easily incorporate into their daily lives, or working with the student to discover and reinforce problem solving skills to strengthen resilience. I also hope to provide a safe space for students, where they can share their concerns without the fear of judgement.

I will be offering support to students on-campus three days a week, where the support provided will be tailored according to each child’s needs.

You are welcome to contact me via Shauna Sanderson or your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions.

If you would like to know more about myself, please feel free to read below.

I am a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Psychology) graduate from the National University of Singapore, and a current student of Monash University’s Master of Counselling program. I have previously worked in the research field of cognitive psychology, and have also volunteered extensively with various non-profit organizations to provide services and support to vulnerable communities such as migrants workers, adults with special needs and children. I believe these experiences have built a good foundation for strong communication skills and empathetic listening necessary for therapeutic work. As someone who values learning, I also look forward to the lessons I will be gaining from the people I meet through this placement."

Kind regards,

Shuen Ho
