Catholic Education Week

By Vanessa Lammana, and the publicity captains

Being in a Catholic School is a wonderful experience as it makes me feel closer to God. People have been having tough experiences and it’s nice to know everyone’s point of view. Hearing about Project Compassion really uplifts me, knowing these people are getting helped by Caritas Australia

Going to a Catholic school has been an excellent experience. Here at Good Shepherd Parish School they teach us all about the Bible, Jesus and Saints. When we learn religion it is exciting and interesting for us as we learn a lot and can grow into better people who are more like Jesus. When you go to a Catholic school you go to Church on special occassions and you pray during the Mass.

We celebrated Catholic Education week during the 13th-20th March 2022. The theme this year was ‘The Way of the Gospel’. The students explored the ways in which we can bring the gospel into the community. Some activities included looking at images and making decisions about how we can change or enhance an outcome. We addressed feelings, decision making and ways to belong. During this week, we have been exploring our roles and responsibilities in the community.

Our Year 6 students have looked at how Caritas works to help the community by putting the Gospel values into practice:

Throughout this term we’ve learnt countless things about the teachings of Jesus. We have learnt about how to write prayers and we also had Ash Wednesday recently and we will soon go through the sacrament of Confirmation.

At Good Shepherd, we have been learning about Caritas Australia and how it has been helping young people like us who are in need. So far, we have watched a girl named Anatercia, a 12 year old girl from Mozambique. She and many others in Mozambique were suffering from drought, food deficiency and a scarce water source. Her life as a 12 year old girl was not the best, until Caritas Australia came in and gave them the opportunity to have more accessible drinking water and taps. Being at a Catholic School makes me feel so much closer to Jesus and to know that God will always be watching over us.

Lately in Religious Education, we have been learning about Lent.
During the time of Lent, we remember that Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and nights, where he was tempted by the devil. We have also been learning about Caritas Australia, an organisation that was set up to help countries in need.

In Grade 6 religion this year, we have learnt about Project Compassion. Recently we have met Anatercia. Her mother had developed a sickness and since then Anatercia took all responsibility for her family. Caritas Australia helped Anatercia, her family and her community a lot.
