Learning Partners

As we set up our classroom routines, we are revisiting some of our key learning strategies.  One of these is a 'Learning Partner'.  Learning Partners ensure quality, intentional talk in the classroom.  The use of learning partners means there is a constant handover to the students when questions are posed, or tasks are underway. Students are provided with a shared response time to consider and engage in meaningful discussions.  Students demonstrate more motivation to respond because they are in charge of their own learning.  Sometimes students feel more confident when using learning partners because we are removing an element of pressure to respond publicly without the opportunity to first articulate thoughts and ideas.  Our students are already beginning to give more detailed answers and gradually developing higher- quality talk.

Learning Partner discussions are very focussed and have a specific outcomes and timeframes.  This avoids students losing momentum and going off task.

For example, 30 seconds to each add a new adjective to this piece of writing

One minute to think of an interesting simile for a rocket.

Two minutes to investigate what has gone wrong with this calculation

Research shows that when speaking and listening is well developed and encouraged it has a positive impact on children’s learning.  We change Learning Partners on a regular basis to ensure students are challenged, engaged and motivated.  Ask your child who their Learning Partner is this week and what learning conversations they may have participated in.
