Year 6 Camp

Canberra Camp Monday 25 February - Friday 1 March

From Jane, Year 6 Teacher

Questacon, Parliament House, role-playing in the House of Representatives, bike riding around Lake Burley Griffin and bowling in Belconnen were definite highlights of this  jam-packed camp.  Canberra is the perfect camp to pursue a balance of learning and fun. We were exhausted by Friday night and all agree it was well worth the trip!

Back at school on Monday, students  wrote about our experiences using the literacy device of 'inference' or 'Show not Tell'.

From Violet W

"I dazed off,  into my own world, as the atrociously long journey began. I was two hours into the trip and it already seemed like I had been cramped up against the window for a century. After nine hours of blood, sweat and tears we made it.

A day into the camp and I already had millions of memories and a highlight was bowling. As we entered what looked like a dark cave, fluorescent lights began to flash.  Ten minutes in and the kids were squealing, pins were falling and all I could smell was sweaty finger and greasy fried food;  all I could taste was bitter defeat."

From Zoe R

"Sitting on the hard seat smelling like fresh water and listening to the wheels crunch leaves on the path. My loose helmet dangling off my head as I looked at the sights surrounding me."

From Olivia T

"Different names are rushing through my head I settle on Olivia as my bowling name:  boring right? I see my name 4th up on the screen, I start cheering as the ball rushes down the alley about to collide with the pins. When it's my turn I can hear my friends and classmates cheering and dancing. It was jaw dropping how many people got a spare.

As the sky darkens I was exhausted.

I was happy once I was in bed."

From Ronan M

"The building was wondrous. It's interior was full of marvel, it was a haven of science education and a  centre of knowledge. We wandered around the building aimlessly looking for more. We had only seen a particle of its grandeur. After we wandered through the buildings entirety sadly, all things must come to an end. We were sadly taken to the bus and onto the next place."

From Aimee G

"The night raced by quickly before I knew it, it was 7:00 in the morning. I got ready to face the huge day in front of me. I spent my day learning about science. I went to Questacon, CSIRO and much more."
