2020 Science Talent Search

The Science Talent Search (STS) is an annual science based competition open to all primary and secondary students in Victoria, Australia. It promotes creative, self-motivated project work through open-minded multi-disciplinary projects.

Science Talent Search fits closely with the Victorian curriculum and our Primary Years Program. The STS theme for 2020 is: Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans which covers a wide range of sciences.  There are nine sections students can choose to enter. The sections are described in detail in the STS Handbook. There are set topics for Creative Writing and Posters/Scientific Wallcharts sections only.

Primary divisions: Creative Writing

1. One fish, two fish, ocean blue…

2. Journey to the bottom of the ocean

3. My ocean adventure

4. My ocean cleaning device

Primary divisions: Posters

1. SOS: Save our oceans!

2. Conserving ocean life

3. Ocean energy

4.Deep blue ocean

The competition runs externally and students will create their projects at home. There are meetings running every Thursday at lunchtime mainly for mentoring and project working time.

Registration closing date: Monday 25th May (Only the STS coordinator can register students)

Entry fees: Individual $8 per entry; Group (maximum 2 students) $15 per entry.

The STS Website has all the information and guidelines you need about the competition:

Be sure to look at the “For Students and Parents” pages and “STS handbook.” Judging day with the exception of the two categories Experimental Research and Creative writing will take place on Saturday 8th August.  This is a unique opportunity for students to shine while presenting their projects to a panel of teachers.   The exciting news is that our school will be hosting the Judging Day for the Posters category so we are keen to have many more students enter this year.

Division Codes are as follows: Year Level Lower Primary L Prep to Year 2, Middle Primary M Year 3 & 4, Upper Primary P Years 5 & 6

Please see the project references for ideas and the registration form link that needs to be filled in and returned to the school office together with the entry fee to the attention of Ms K as soon as possible.

Allergy & Anaphylaxis Awareness

At Auburn South Primary School, we have a number of children who may have a severe allergic reaction to substances and certain foods (i.e. all sorts of nuts (including peanuts), sesame seeds, dairy products fish and eggs). These students may have an anaphylactic reaction not only by ingesting the food, but from skin contact.

Please be aware of what you may put into your child’s lunchbox for recess and lunch. Please do not pack products that contain nuts in your child’s play and lunch boxes. Common snack and lunch items  such as peanut butter, pesto and Nutella must not to be brought into the school. Other products have warnings on the back of the packet as to whether or not they contain traces of nuts.

In addition to the products mentioned above, these are some other common snack, lunch and after school items that must not be brought to school:

Peanuts, Hazelnuts, Pistachios, Walnuts, Macadamia, Pecans, Almonds, sesame seeds, Pine Nuts and all other.

If you're not sure, please read product labels carefully to make sure that you're not packing products that contain nuts in your child's lunchbox. Importantly, please share this information with other family members and friends that may visit the school or be involved in family drop-off and pick-up routines.

While dairy, eggs and fish products are allowed, I ask you to discuss the importance to your own child to not share their food with others and only eat what is in their own lunch box. All of these allergies are very serious and certainly life-threatening. These students may require an Epipen to be administered if they come into contact or eat, and react to these foods.

Thank you for your assistance and your understanding in this very important matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our school nurse, Caroline Coleman for further advice.

Working Bee - Sunday March 22

Very soon we will be sending out a sign up request for the Term 1 Working Bee on March 22, 2020. There is a huge amount to get through to assist the maintenance team in keeping the school grounds in good order and many hands will make light work of it.

This term we will be focusing on prepping and oiling the various decking, boxes and other wooden infrastructure across the school campus.

If all families could contribute just a few hours of their time it would be greatly appreciated. It is always a fun day of work and the outcome always rewarding! Please save the date - Sunday March 22, 8.30am - 12.30pm. Even one hour will make a difference!
