Inter-House Public Speaking

Showcasing the depth of public speaking was easily achieved in the Inter-House Public Speaking Competition held at School on Friday August 16th.
While the team list can be viewed below, it was the great spirit shown at each level that was equally impressive. Year 7 students presented their views on the question of zoos and Year 8 speakers discussed the idea that ‘Schools teach more than subjects’. These speeches were marked by their logical arguments and assured delivery. Mrs Christine Phillips and Mrs Kathryn Barton adjudicated this section of the competition.
Year 9 and 10 students were invited to express their view on the topic of packaging and plastic bag use and the competitive nature of youth sports. These year levels were able to present some very convincing arguments on these concerns and the adjudicators, (Mr Scott Langan and Mrs Allison Crickmore), were impressed with their speeches.
It seems the senior years provide the chance for long-suffering public speaking rivalries to be fought out. This section of the competition brings out the best in our students and their skills are well developed. Confident delivery and well-constructed arguments and ideas are a hallmark of our senior students. Their greatest challenge was to limit their speeches to 3 minutes! Mr Jarred Vehlen, Mrs Alisoun Downing and Mrs Jane Marks were working hard to adjudicate these speeches.
As the convenor of this annual competition, which contributes points toward the House Cup, I would like to thank the members of the Senior Public Speaking Club for their MC and Timekeeping roles on the day, and the Prefects for their help with crowd control. The English Department again supplied adjudicators. I’m grateful for all those who have assisted the students in their preparation for this event.
