DAV Schools’ Competition State Playoffs 2019
On the 22nd August five Girton Grammar School Debating Teams competed in the State Playoffs of the Debater’s Debaters’ Association of Victoria Schools’ Competition at Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School in Essendon, having each finished on top or equal top of their grade ladders for the Bendigo region. The students enjoyed the challenge against winners of other regional rounds and had some great successes.
In C Grade, the C1 team consisting of Will Hamilton (9Je), Aubrey Jacobs (10Jo), Lasith Kulasekera (10Jo), and Janidu Hathurusinghe (10Je) debated the topic, That all men should be required to take compulsory paternity leave losing narrowly by 1 point.
In B Grade, our Year 11 team 1 consisting of Dominic Tune (11Je), James Brown (11F) and Noah Ashby (11F) debated the topic, That we should have a quota for people under the age of 30 in parliament, winning by an impressive 3 points. They will now progress to the 3rd Playoff round at Northcote High School on the 4th September. Congratulations fellas!
Our B Grade Year 11 team 3 consisting of Soumik Das (11F), Jake Arulsuthan (11F) and Danai Mahachi (11F) debated the same topic as above losing by only 2 points.
Our A Grade Year 12 team 1 consisting of Abbey Saxon (12F), Max Tulloch (12Jo), Charlie Wardrop (12A) and Jordan Rogers (12M) debated the topic That we should ban unpaid internships winning by 2 points. Congratulations to Charlie who won best speaker, and to the team which will now progress to the Octo-Finals at St. Leonard's College on the 11th September.
Our A Grade Year 12 team 2 consisting of Liam Tinker (11A), Conrad Livingstone (12F), Thomas Millar (12Jo) and Tafara Mhindurwa (11F) debated the same topic above, losing by 3 points.
The students had a great time whether they won or not. Special thanks go to Mr Stephen Tinker who helped drive the teams to the venue. Congratulations to all who participated.
