FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reptile Team

Congratulations to Jamieson Brodie (Year 11) who recently undertook work experience at Healesville Sanctuary. It is extremely difficult to secure a place at the Sanctuary for work experience, however, Jamieson's involvement and leadership of the LHS Reptile House student team gave him the edge when applying.

Jamieson and some of our other reptile keepers were recently featured in the Herald Sun newspaper and on ABC radio discussing the new addition to the reptile house, Cleo the crocodile.

Resilience Project

On the first day of this term the Year 8 and 9 students were involved in a presentation by the The Resilience Project as part of our ongoing program to build resilience in each of our students.  Presenter Martin Heppell talked about the common traits of building resilience:

Being empathetic

Showing gratitude

Being mindful

The session was based around his experiences of these behaviours and how research suggests that people who also demonstrate these characteristics are able to cope with challenging situations.

The work to build the resilience of our students will continue into the future.

University Open Days

University Open Days are approaching.   It is a great opportunity for students to have a look at some of the courses offered and speak to university staff.

Year 10 to 12 students are encouraged to attend these days, our careers team has more information if needed.

Assemblies

All year levels have now attended the end of semester awards assemblies. This year there was a minor change to the awards, an ACADEMIC MERIT award has become an ACADEMIC ENDEAVOUR award - endeavour meaning 'to try hard.'

All students are able to earn an award in their classes with a 'can do' attitude to their learning. Congratulations to all students who achieved awards for last semester, we look forward to even more students earning awards this semester.

Special thanks to the parents, guardians and friends who came along to the assemblies and to our year level teams for their excellent organisation of these events.

Leadership Day for students

On Wednesday July 13, our student leadership team ventured out with Assistant Principal Melissa McMillan to work as a team on a number of aspects of their own personal development and their input as to how to improve our school. All of the student leaders agreed that it was a very worthwhile and productive day.

Reflecting on their experiences as student leaders in Semester 1, all students noted how they have grown, in their ability to work with others and building relationships, in public speaking, time management and organisation, and academically. This was certainly borne out in our recent awards ceremonies, with many of our leaders being acknowledged across the curriculum for their achievements.

I look forward to seeing what this talented group will achieve in Semester 2!
