Year 7 English

Getting the reading rolling along!

Our year 7 English classes have been buzzing with excitement the last few weeks, as the focus on reading has intensified. We have been reading for twenty minutes every lesson. We have been keeping a reading log and talking with our peers about what we are reading, and have completed our first PAT reading test, with some pleasing results.

One student has shared that he has found the reading time really peaceful and it has helped him to focus on his learning.

As a school, our focus is to improve our literacy results for all our students through reading, because we know that even fifteen minutes a day can mean over 15,000 new words that students learn per year. Given that half of all knowledge is having the right words, we are committed to helping them have the right words.

Last week, two of our English classes were introduced to their Lighthouse reading mentors in their first intense 'drop everything and read' session.

As one of the regular teachers of these students, I enjoy getting around and listening to them talk about their books and what they're learning, but it can take time to get to every student.

Even in the first session, the students were excited to share what they had learnt and the connections they are making between their books and their real life. One student shared that his favourite part of reading time is when the mentors come in because; 'They are really positive and encourage you to read.'

The positive energy in the room was clearly overflowing and the students are really looking forward to connecting with their mentors this week to share about their book again.

We are so very thankful to the Lighthouse Program, for bringing so many wonderful volunteers in. The conversations in the room are proving to be immensely valuable to our cohort. I can see the students growing in confidence and comprehension right before my eyes.

If you would like to know how to support your child's literacy more at home. Ask them about what they're reading in class. Every student from Year 7-12 is reading each day and your conversations with them, help them remember all of the fabulous new things they have learnt.
