Foundation News

Welcome to Foundation!
A big welcome to all of our Foundation students and families. It has been a busy first week at school, we have been learning lots of new routines, new teachers and meeting lots off new friends.
Our Foundation students have been flying high already in the way they have settled into life at school. It was great to see the resilience that each of them demonstrated when saying goodbye to mums/dads/carers on their very first day at school.
We are looking forward to having lots of adventures this year in Foundation.
PBS
This week we have been learning about how we show respect, resilience and excellence at school. Foundation have been receiving lots of feathers throughout the week because of the way they have shown our school values. One day this week we managed to make 6 WINGS!! It was very exciting.
We have learnt about what happens when our feathers turn into wings and our wings turn into birds. We are working hard to try and beat our goal of 6 over the next couple of weeks.
Parent Challenge: Test your child's memory by asking what they received feathers for at school during the day (they should be able to tell you).

Take Home Books & Magic Words
Reading:
Each day your child will take home a ‘take home book’ that they will have chosen to share with someone at home. Your child can be read to or you can read with your child. Eventually your child will read his/her book independently. They might make up the story or predict what is going on. During this time you can discuss the following:
- what the book was about,
- point out a favourite part,
- discuss the parts of the book,
- are there any characters and
- where the story takes place.
Magic Words:
We encourage you to put these somewhere visible (on the fridge, noticeboard etc.) and refer to them regularly, it will help your student recognise them. They are not to be “sounded out” as this is not a strategy that will help with these words (or with many words, for that matter!) Look at the first sound (we call sounds phonemes), perhaps another prominent sound in the word, write them out, play ‘Hangman’, make them with magnetic letters and so on. It’s also a good idea to practise them in a different order each time as your child will be very good at remembering the order rather than the word!
