Secondary Swimming Carnival

Denifle / Jarrett goes back-to-back

The first major inter-house competition of the year, the 49th annual Secondary Swimming Carnival, was held last Friday at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, North Adelaide. Defending champions were Denifle / Jarrett but last year’s results suggested a strong challenge would be on the cards with the bulk of the 2018 age champions coming from Lagrange, Lacordaire and Burke.

During the morning’s events, Noah Caton (Burke) touched home to break the 27-year-old U15 50m Freestyle record. His 27.47 bettered the mark set by Andrew Albertini (Aquinas) set in 1992.

The day’s blue riband event, the Open 50m Freestyle, was taken out comfortably by defending Open Age Champion, Jesse Taylor (Lagrange), in a time of 26.48.

A record-breaking performance in the 50m Backstroke was recorded by Jake Martin (Aquinas) shaving more than 2 seconds off the 2017 mark set by Noah Caton (Burke), touching in at 36.34.

By lunchtime and the conclusion of the day’s 50m individual events, the defending champions had established a handy lead, however, with the relay events scheduled to be swum at the end of day all houses remained in contention.

The much-anticipated Water Polo final was taken out by De Vitoria / Lagrange in a one-sided encounter defeating Aquinas / Horten 8-1. Burke / Lacordaire defeated Denifle / Jarrett 6-4 to finish third.

The relay events saw two record breaking swims. The first came in the U13 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay with the team from Aquinas - Jake Martin, Ben Baker, Sebastian Zajaczkowski and Eli Murray – shaving almost two seconds off the previous mark in 2:30.97.  The second was by the combined Burke / Lacordaire team in the U16 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay, the boys touching home in 2:05.55.

At the end of the day however, the final scoreboard told a familiar tale with Denifle / Jarrett going back-to-back to take out their second Annual Swimming Carnival in two years, with an increased winning margin from 12 months ago.
