Electives for Students in years 10, 11 and 12, 2020

This week students were notified of their proposed electives for 2020.

These electives are still subject to students receiving relevant recommendations based on exams, On Demand tests and learning tasks.

Parents will notice on Compass that payments for electives are now open. These are based on the subjects which are currently assigned to students, and should be paid for by Tuesday, 3 December to confirm places in high demand subjects.

Families with financial difficulties can contact the office to arrange a payment plan.

If you are not happy with the subjects assigned you can request changes, but we have already done our best to accommodate the preferences you indicated in Term 3, so changes are very unlikely. Senior sub school students can request changes to subjects by following guidelines distributed in DiSCovery on Wednesday, 13 November.

Request for change must be on the appropriate form and submitted by Wednesday, 20 November. Students who were absent on Wednesday, 13 November can see electives by going to the sub school office.

Conscious Parenting  -

DSC Celebrates Diversity

On Friday, 25 October, I attended a Conscious Parenting event, which was a collaboration between Doncaster Secondary College, the Iranian community and the House of Persia Community and Cultural Centre (HOPE).

Hosted by family therapist Mr Touraj Afshar, this engaging event covered topics including parenting styles, boundary setting and the teaching and learning of values within a multicultural context.

At DSC we highly value both cultural diversity and mental health. We encourage families to visit the BeYou website to explore more about these important issues.

Cultural diversity - What is it, why is it important and what are the challenges?

  • Culture isn’t just linked to a person’s racial or ethnic background. You can identify with a particular group based on your birthplace, country of origin, ethnicity, language, behaviour, traditions, values, beliefs or world views.
  • Our cultural experiences shape the way we see ourselves, our values and the way we understand our world.
  • Cultural perspectives influence how we parent, nurture and teach our children.
  • Cultural experiences and practices foster a sense of belonging. Although not everyone from a particular group may hold the same values, diversity encourages people to celebrate their differences.
  • When the experiences, practices and beliefs of families from different cultural backgrounds aren’t recognised or valued, this can lead to miscommunication or misunderstanding.

DSC supports and welcomes families from all cultural backgrounds. In particular we support the wonderful work of the House of Persia Community and Cultural Centre (HOPE). We encourage you to visit the HOPE website to learn more about their amazing work in our community. We will bring you more stories about their work in future editions of our College newsletter.
