What Do You Want To Do When You Grow Up?

During Term 2 and 3, all Year 9-12 students are asked to reflect upon their future subject and career options. Ideally all students will select subjects and programs that are a reflection of their abilities, hobbies, interests, personality, values and the pre-requisites required for entry into a course that leads onto a range of exciting career possibilities.

We ask Year 9 and 10 students to investigate a range of options and select three preferred career options to assist with identifying the ideal school subjects and senior program at school. ‘Getting it right’ can provide students with better academic results and easier transition into chosen course options, especially for people aiming to specialise in a particular career.

Whilst some people just seem to know what they want to do from an early age there are equally as many who become anxious when asked,  'What do you want to do when you grow up?'. For some individuals, they are interested in so many things and may be reluctant to narrow their options too early. Not everyone should focus and specialise in one career – in fact for many people with an intense but sometimes short lived interest in diverse options range of learning can lead onto developing the very skills that jobs in the future require.

Watch the video on our College careers website  to hear why and how being interested in many things can be an advantage.

Regardless if students have chosen to specialise or keep their options wide open, they will benefit from discussing their interests, hobbies, dreams and favourite subjects with me in the Careers Department – as someone who has changed careers direction more than anyone I know (these include Engineering, Science, Nutrition, Design, Business, Marketing, Recruitment, Fine Art and Education), it was heartening to hear someone else express how being interested in so many things can be provide super powers.

It is in this job as a careers counsellor I have found my own multiple interests very relevant and useful for others.
