LIBRARY
St Nicholas School is a community of readers.
Let's make this year the year we take every opportunity to read because we want to.
Unfortunately a restricting factor is a student not having a library bag.
I hear you say, "why do they need a bag, my child will not take a bag to school". I tell the students the bag is not a fashion accessory, it doesn't have to look good, any bag will do. What a bag does do is offer some protection to the book against the ravages of travelling home in the school bag. I have plain calico bags for purchase for Yr 5 / 6 students for $1. So, please assist me in this matter so that students may take their borrows home and students are borrowing regularly.
No food or drink on my books
Food and drink is for the chooks
Library bags keep ‘em clean
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag every time
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out
LIBRARY BAGS
We all shout
LIBRARY BAGS MATTER
Not just some of the time but all of the time.
Morris tells us Stories are full of feelings. Characters have them about their problems, their friends, their enemies and themselves. And we share these emotions as we read. It’s called empathy. In our own lives, empathy is one of the things our friends really like about us. It's also the best hope we have of our species' survival.
I love writing about characters who, on the surface at least, are different to me and most of my readers - cane toads, nose germs, intestinal worms, kids who give up their business class seats to people with sore backs, teenagers who can ride a horse and shoot a rifle at the same time. And sometimes they're different on a deeper level too. Very brave characters, for example, and unfailingly optimistic ones, and characters capable of huge unselfishness and sacrifice.
And so my FTF February proposition is this. That people whose childhoods are filled with stories and shared feelings, whose adult lives are rich with the resulting empathy, are far less likely, should extreme power come to them later in life, to mentally strip entire communities of their humanity and condemn them to brutal suffering or even death.
Thankyou Morris.
A fantastic time was had by the library leaders showing off their read aloud skills to the kinder, Yr 1, Yr 2 students while they ate their lunch. The Yr 6 students were asked to choose a picture book which they could read with a partner or individually. In fact it was such a positive experience for all that we will be repeating the exersize throughout the year.
A huge thankyou to the library leaders for stepping out of their comfort zone.
Orders are on their way.
This term I am hoping to start some lunchtime book clubs where students who enjoy similair books and topics can gather for a chat and a share about their fav reads
Book Week, Book Fair, loads and loads of new books and so much more.
I am always needing help with book covering, so please email me or send a message with your child if you can help. No experience necessary, on the job training provided. You can cover here at school or do it at home.
This year at St Nicholas School we have so many ways students can access books for information and reading for enjoyment. As the term progresses ask your child about this.
