Meals on Wheels – Hampers of Hope
Hampers of Hope hold an annual Food and Toy Run, which is sponsored by R&J Smith Transport. Our community are encouraged to donate toys and non-perishable items which are then distributed amongst less fortunate families. This year we are concentrating on families within flood effected communities as well as many less fortunate families within our own community. This year Hampers of Hope were able to collect one pallet of toys, one pallets of long-life food items as well as cash donations. This combined with the Lego which previously acquired all required wrapping. Kim Mecham and Staff were so gratefully that the students from Marian Catholic College were able to volunteer some of their time in helping to wrap and label all our gifts. All done a great job and they were so happy they were able to assist Hamper of Hope at this very busy time of the year. These will then be distributed through various service provider, schools and church groups.
The following students from the Community Action Team and the year 9 student from Kelly Centofanti’s year group, who helped send a survey to the students who kindly volunteered.
Thank you from Kim, and Sanita.
Wednesday 30th of November was our last day of Carevan service for 2022. The amount of students and teachers who got on board to make work lighter was a huge help.
We know there are many blessings associated with feeding others in need.
What are some actions we could be taking towards developing empathy as well as creating sustainable programs in our communities? The following are some key steps in taking action:
1) Awareness
Awareness essentially involves educating the school community as to why there is a need for action and volunteerism around feeding those in need and creating self-sustainable programs.
2) Organising
Having a team of dedicated, committed, and driven volunteers from our team of staff and students who share your motivation to help alleviate hunger in our community, is important for the sustainability of your goals and vision.
Sometimes, our local restaurants and grocery stores throw consumable food products away as there are no available resources to deliver these items to shelters or locations where they can be used. These locations can be the Griffith Community Centre, located at 1 Olympic Street, Griffith and Meals on Wheels Griffith at 16 Yambil Street.
3) Volunteering your Time
Commit some time once a term throughout the school calendar where students can send their interest to Mrs Lole and students in year 9 who would like to join the community action team for Marian Catholic College can send their details to Mr Abadala.
We have a rotaing roster on a term by term basis where students can take turns to help with Carevan.
A special thanks to Mrs Maureen Shannon, who is the TAS Department Coordinator and she also coordinates the Carevan Grifith and has been for a very long time in the hospitality department. Mr Arai Kenta has also been a huge help with his year 10 hospitality class. Without Mrs Shannon this would not be possible. The students have been given the opportunity to learn and contribute to such a great cause.
Any queries about Carevan Griffith or to volunteer, you can contact Janice Sartor or Peta Dummett at the Griffith Community Centre on 6962 4144 or email; manager@griffithcommunitycentre.org.au
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
