Year Level Leaders Report

2023 Year 12 Leader: Report

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Firstly, I would like to say how excited I am to work with you and your child as Year 12 Level Leader, as they begin the final year of their academic journey at South Oakleigh College.

At South Oakleigh, our school value High Expectations. promotes both students' academic achievement and well-being. Research shows that the expectations of teachers, parents and peers affect students' self-esteem, feelings of self-efficacy and academic motivation. These motivational factors are strongly linked to learning and achievement.  Our High Expectations for our Year 12 cohort include:

  • Uniform – students wearing their correct academic uniform. They are role models for the younger students and also represent our school in the wider community. If your child is unable to wear the academic uniform, it is an expectation that a note will be provided to explain why. Otherwise, students will be sent home and required to return to school in the correct uniform.
  • Attendance – students are required to maintain 90% attendance for each subject. Absences will only be approved by a medical certificate, or parent choice (confirmed by email or a phone call) explaining the reason why. If a student is ill on the day of a scheduled SAC, they must contact their teacher to advise of their absence and alternative arrangements will be made. A medical certificate for the absence must be presented to the Senior School Office. Failure to do so will result in the student forfeiting the opportunity to complete the SAC.
  • Lateness to class – students are expected to arrive at school and for each class on time.  Students who continuously arrive late may fall behind in their classwork. If a student misses the first part of the lesson, for example, they may miss important information that they may require for study for an upcoming SAC, it also impacts the learning of others if the teacher needs to stop the flow of the lesson to revisit information because students are late. Students who are chronically late will be required to attend a study session (Wednesday after-school).
  • Use class time effectively – students are expected to be respectful and take responsibility to use their time in class to complete work set by their subject teacher. Any student who disrupts the learning of others will be removed from the class and be expected to work in the Senior School Office and parents will be notified to address this behaviour.
  • Year 12 Study Centre – this space is designated for studying. Students are expected to use this space to complete class work, revise for subjects and work in study groups. Students are responsible for keeping the Study Centre clean and tidy to be used by all their peers. Misuse of the space may result in the centre being closed for a period of time or individual students being removed to study elsewhere. Students cannot go home when they have a study period. They are expected to use this time to complete classwork, homework task and study.

Their final goal is in sight, that of the successful completion of their VCE and the opportunity to go into the field of their choice in years to come.  For 2023 my aim is to provide our students with the skills, knowledge and support they need to be the best they can be every day during this important milestone.

My aim is to create a positive mini-community with you and your child, working to achieve the best possible outcomes for them This triangular approach will allow your child to play an active role in their own education and ensure that we are all on the same page.
