Climate Canons

What we achieved in 2022

A year to remember!

WHAT a year it has been for our Climate Canons - awards winners, recycling extraordinaires, tree planters, waste managers, game quiz masters and information overloading enthusiasts!

Our passionate team has grown, with room to join in 2023 if you are keen to help the College become more sustainable (email Miss Pisconeri, dpisconeri@norbert.wa.edu.au) and been involved in so many events and activities over the course of the year. Students involved should be very proud of the positive impact they have had on the College, not only in changing the way we think as a community about waste but also caring about the world around us.

To recap on the year that was, it is hard to believe that the Climate Canons were involved and hosted all these events. Thank you to all the students and staff who have participated in our quizzes, come along to our lunchtime events, drove buses, supervised events and supported our initiatives. We hope you have enjoyed it all as much as the Climate Canons have.

Sea Shepherd Marine Debris Clean Up

THE Year 7 – 9 Climate Canons assisted Sea Shepherd on Tuesday 6 December by removing a whopping 20kg of marine debris from Port Beach, Fremantle. Their efforts saw fishing line, micro plastics, coffee cups and cigarette butts, just to name a few items, be removed from our beautiful coastline. The students were engaged in discussions about where the waste comes from and how to reduce our impact with Sea Shepherd’s Marine Debris Administration Coordinator, Karolina Strittmatter, and were outstanding ambassadors for the College as they worked to protect and conserve our marine environment whilst learning and having fun. Thank you to Mr McGoorty for driving the bus and support staff Miss Muir, Miss Gawley, Mrs Matchado and Sr Cecily who joined us on our quest to make the world more sustainable, removing one piece of waste at a time.

Give Write

GIVE Write are a not-for-profit enterprise aimed at taking donations of new and pre-loved school stationery to recycle, repackage and regift to Western Australian kids. The Climate Canons were introduced to this hardworking team at the Waste Wise Schools Student Meet at John Curtin College of the Arts in Term 3. The students wanted to engage and assist Give Write in collecting and repurposing stationery for fellow students. On Tuesday and Wednesday this week students in Years 7 and 8 tested, cleaned and sorted hundreds of items ready for Give Write to donate in the new year. The program students undertook promoted recycling to reduce local landfill and supporting school students and teachers with a wide range of donated products. Thank you to Mrs Silva and Mr Hawke for assisting with the program.
