Mathematics

Primary school visit, incursion

Learning by doing

DURING Independent Learning Week, our Year 7 students were given the opportunity to participate in mathematics incursion organised by World of Maths. This is an interactive session where the approach of learning is fun through real-life examples. Students have to understand instructions for each activity and apply problem solving skills.

These hands-on activities encourage student participation as a team, increases their confidence to try different skills and eventually sparks the love of learning. There is no time limit set for each activity as long as all students “give it a go”. There were more than 15 different activities and students of varied abilities were encouraged to participate. Each of these activities had hidden maths complex problem and student need to focus to come up with desirable solutions. Students had great time during these sessions.

Presenter  Sascha Hentz from World of Maths was excellent in organising, moving around to give instructions, encouraging students to work as a team and to be focussed.   I would like to thank supervising teachers for the sessions and in particular Ms Tersigni who coordinated the mathematics incursion.

Year 6 Boot Camp

EARLY in Term 4 we conducted a Mathematics Boot Camp for Year 6 primary school students who will be studying at St Norbert College in 2023 as well as a Mathematics workshop for parents and grandparents.

We had more than 80 students attend these sessions over a period of four weeks. Boot camp is designed and delivered by committed and enthusiastic Mathematics staff. This helps the student to gain confidence in transition between primary and secondary school and to meet students from other primary schools and get a feel for mathematics in a secondary school.  I thank our Mathematics staff who conducted these workshops, which is beneficial to both students and parents.

Feedback from students:

I enjoyed the St Norbert College Math boot camp. It was a fun experience answering questions, learning some new mathematical tricks, hanging out with my friends and making new possible friendships. This helped me especially with the Primary school to High school transition.
