Basketball Exhibition
THE Year 8 Specialised Basketball Students took part in an exhibition game against Woodvale Secondary College at Cannington Leisureplex - a true showcase of the growth students have made in basketball in 2022.
The girls played with amazing spirit and showed an endeavour to get the best out of themselves and team mates. Dariana Dweh was unstoppable on both ends of the court, contesting every shot and constantly finishing at the basket. Both Millie Stancil and Ella Baxter were offensive threats every time they had possession, either shifting defenders with their ball handling or knocking down open shots. Kirrali Richmond played like a spark plug, she was zippy on defence having many steals. Year 7 Students Anika Heyman and Charlotte Matthews, did not look out of place. The girls fitted in well to the team offence/defence scheme. This groups of girls have a very bright future in the program and as a community we are very excited for what they can achieve.
Coach Colin Driscoll and Mr Godfrey described the Year 8 boys' performance as true ‘Grit and Grind’. The boys hustled after every rebound, picked each other up of the floor and played tenaciously. Anthony Flores showcased his ability to lead the team as a point guard and initiate countless offensive plays. Both Deacon Hollow and Mitchell Rush demonstrated their ability to shoot both open and contested shots, making a high percentage of them. Zac Foo and Jackson Nicolaou played well above their sizes and showed how much growth they have made in 2022.
Defence was a focus for the game, Zack Hately & Brandon Chong were clawing every ball that went near them and did not allow the opposition to have any easy shots. Kobe Varias and Lucas Young Free played well to the team concepts, Kobe was very unselfish with his passing and always making the correct pass. When Lucas shoots with confidence, the other teams should be worried and this game was a great example of this, Lucas was able to hit a number of shots in the last quarter. Our Year 8 Boys Specialised Basketball are one of the more committed groups to wanting to improve and it was great to see that this was rewarded in their performance to conclude the year.
