SPA Celebrations
On Tuesday evening the school celebrated the achievements of the 89 students who achieved the amazing result of 4.5 or above for their most recent SPA 3 reports.
Student leader Ben Okely congratulated the students and urged them to continue to aim high with their studies and be good role models for all students at McGuire College.
Principal of McGuire College Mr. John Sciacca told the gathering of 120 parents, grandparents, teachers and, most importantly of all, the students how proud he was of their achievements. He also urged them to grasp the opportunities that they had before them.
A big thank you to Junior School Leader Ms. Julie Hannan who did an outstanding job in catering for the evening. She was ably assisted by students Summer Keane and Ben Okely. Also, a big thank you to Jayde Robinson who did a lot of the background work in organising the evening.
Note: Teachers are currently completing SPA 4 reports. They will be available for parents and students in week 7.
Sport
On Thursday 18th July, Jonathan and Joshua Safari competed in the State Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park in Melbourne.
Both boys qualified in the 17-20 yr category having finished 3rd and 4th respectively at the previous Hume Region event in Term 3.
The course at Bundoora presented some fresh challenges for the boys as they navigated the slippery grassy slopes of the state course. The competition was also fierce with many competitors being members of athletics clubs and programs in Melbourne.
Unfortunately it was a mixed day for our boys with Jonathon rolling his ankle on a difficult corner of the track and being unable to complete the course. His brother Joshua finished the 5km course in 63rd place from 92 competitors, in a time of 18.50.28, an improvement of nearly a minute on his Hume time. Well done Josh.
Gnurad Update Week #2
Dear Parents and friends,
We are now well into week 2 of our program and the students are settling into the routine and beginning to explore the boundaries of what is acceptable and what is not! This is a process we call storming and it is a completely normal part of adjusting to a new environment.
Over the past week and a half we have enjoyed some specific team time getting to know each other as well as establishing some team expectations and agreements.
Team expectations:
- Be helpful
- No put-downs
- Give everyone a say (be inclusive)
- Work together (be inclusive again!)
- Get to know each other
Expectations of our 2B teachers:
- Point out issues
- Be honest
- Be supportive, no put-downs, constructive feedback
There have also been a number of classes including CLP, intro to bikes, Presentation Skills, Self Awareness and many more.
Today the students have a class called “Expo Skills” that is all about learning the skills needed to begin our first overnight hike called Expo 1. This happens on Thursday and Friday next week and is a great opportunity to get to know each other in the outdoors.
Tomorrow we have another day out, which is our first major off campus day as a team. This will require the students to work together as a team and build a bridge to cross a local creek. The students all set an individual goal yesterday for the activity which they will work on during the day and then receive feedback on their progress from staff and other students – a great model for improvement.
