Chapel and Assembly

Cumberland Chapel begins at 10.00am every Monday followed by Assembly at 10.30am. Parents are always welcome to attend. Antonio M and Krisy I, our Cumberland Captains lead Assemblies. Each week, a Cumberland class is scheduled to share something that their class has been learning. This week 4C shared a video that they had created on Forces. Max K, Anushka S, Alana J and Owen M presented the following at Assembly:

Owen M: Good morning Cumberland! I am Owen and these are my friends Anushka, Max and Alana. In Term 2 our integrated studies topic was Motion and Forces. In this topic of Motion and Forces we learnt about gravity, friction, push and pull.

Anushka S: One of the activities we were assigned was to create a media presentation in groups of 2-4.

Max K: In this media presentation, we had a choice to make a game show, news report or a speech.

Alana J: We had lots of fun doing this media presentation. Here are some photos from scenes of the video that we put together.

Each class is rostered to present at Assembly on the following dates:

  • 29 July - Year 4A
  • 5 August - Year 3A
  • 12 August - Year 3S
  • 19 August - Year 6M
  • 26 August - Year 6K
  • 2 September - Year 5M
  • 9 September - Year 5K

Cumberland Sporting Achievements

Cumberland students continue to shine and should be proud of their many sporting achievements. The following Year 4/5/6 students and teams are committed to training and work hard to achieve their goals:

  • The mixed Soccer Team won both the District and Division finals. The team now goes on to compete at the Regional Finals on Monday 12 August.
  • The mixed Netball Team won their District final and will compete in the Division finals on Friday 26 July.
  • Mackenzie SB, Luca S, Sienna D, Georgia D and Chloe W competed at the Northern Metropolitan Regional Cross Country Championships.
  • Sienna D and Georgia D both competed at the State Cross Country Championships.
  • Alex M made the State 12 and under soccer team. Kaylin A made the final State trial and Ethan Y made the Regional level trial .

Well done to all students involved and good luck with future competitions!

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

5K are very lucky to be participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) program with Ms Hannah and Mrs Schulz during Term 3!  It is so much fun looking after the chickens, weeding, cooking and getting to know the garden and kitchen. We have been working in teams that we have named: The Oven Omegas, Food Hackers, Boiling Broccoli, Fresh Fruiters and the Martian Mixers.

It is important for us to know the difference between the weeds and the plants. We have worked hard at weeding the garden so that the vegetables and plants in our garden can thrive. Harvesting the vegetables is also exciting as we then get to use them in our cooking. We have harvested vegetables and herbs such as beetroot, turnips, pumpkins, fennel, broccoli, spring onions, mint and parsley. This week we worked collaborative in teams and cooked vegetable frittata!

One of our responsibilities is to care for the chickens so Mr Hudson taught us what to do. We must look to see if the chickens are healthy. First off, if the chicken’s comb is bright red and upright it is healthy, if the comb is pinkish and flopped over it is unhealthy. Also, if the chickens have lost feathers they might have a disease or the other chickens may have a pecking order and been plucking out another chicken’s feathers. If this is the case, the chicken with missing feathers may have to be separated from the group. It is also important for us to check to see if the chickens have enough food and water. Our chickens are free-range so they get to forage around in their interesting enclosure. Each day we also collect eggs.

SAKG is so much fun and we are so lucky that we have the opportunity to learn in such a wonderful kitchen and garden!

Avoiding the Politics of Parenting

Michael Grose, one of Australia’s leading parenting educators offers sound parenting advice reminding parents not to compare children but rather to focus on individual differences and achievements.

‘Kids develop at their own rates' Each child has his or her own developmental clock, which is nearly impossible to alter. There are late bloomers, early developers, bright sparks and steady-as-you-go kids everywhere. It is the first group that can cause the most concern for parents who habitually compare children to siblings, their friends’ kids and even themselves when they were in school. The trick is to focus on your child’s improvement and effort and use your child’s results as the benchmark for his or her progress and development. “Your spelling is better today than it was a month ago” is a better measure of progress than “Your spelling is the best in the class!” For the full article, please go to: https://www.parentingideas.com.au/blog/avoiding-the-politics-of-parenting/

Parent Helpers Information Session

The College is offering Fairview and Cumberland School parents the opportunity to partake in the Parent Helpers’ Information Session if you missed the opportunity to attend in February. It will outline the program requirements and how parents can actively be involved in College life. Parents who have not attended either sessions cannot assist in the classroom. The session is scheduled for Thursday 29 August, from 6.00pm to 7.00pm in the College Library. Interested participants can email admin@aitkencollege.edu.au by Friday 16 August.

Community Service

Please support our Year 6 Community Service Captains, Jayda C and Gabrielle G, with their fundraiser. They are raising money for the Smith Family Foundation to support families in need. All Cumberland students have the opportunity to guess how many lollies in the jar for a small price and the closest guess will win the lollies. Thank you!
