2019 Year 10 Careers Panel
A wonderful group of Alumni returned to the College on Friday 19 July to talk to the Year 10 cohort about their courses, careers and pathways since leaving Aitken College – what they know now that they wish they had known when in Year 10:
- Thim Ng - pilot for Jetstar
- Charlotte Butcher - recently completed a Public Relations degree and working for Qantas
- Matthew Perta - Police Officer
- Amanda Moore - studying Orthoptics
- Sara Galofaro - studying Nursing
- Zac Tzaferis - originally a Physiotherapist and now also a Firefighter
- Julia Kerry - studying Law
- Laura Basile - working at the RSPCA
They told their stories about the paths they had taken that led them to their present circumstances. Although each story was heartfelt and unique, common themes emerged. The Alumni reminded the Year 10 students to choose a path they are excited about. All our speakers were passionate about their studies and their work and they love what they are doing. They advised the students that they should understand their strengths and utilise that knowledge in making wise choices. The Alumni also emphasised the importance of being open to new pathways and having the flexibility to make changes at various stages along their career paths.
It was essential to have a safety net if circumstances were not as positive as hoped upon leaving secondary school and into the future. Without exception, the value of undertaking voluntary work and internships whilst at University was highlighted. Being able to tell future employers of the learning experienced and the skills developed through this work is invaluable. Employers have great respect for prospective employees who have undertaken voluntary work because it shows their commitment to helping others and their ability to manage their time well. It was suggested to the Year 10 students that they take every opportunity offered to them over the coming years to value add to their Resumes. In addition, casual work undertaken while at Secondary school and during further study, even if not directly relevant to future employment, provides students with team management, communication, negotiation, customer service and problem-solving skills; skills all highly valued by employers.
We are very grateful to our past students for so willingly giving up their time to return to the College. Their examples as role models are exemplary and the information they impart to the students is invaluable. Thank you very much to our Alumni participants. Thank you also to the Year 10 students for the interest and respect they showed during the presentation, your attention and behaviour were excellent.
