Music Matters

On behalf of the Performing Arts at St Pius X College and our parents group PAPA I would like to give our deepest sympathies to Tom Van Dijk’s family and friends on his passing. Tom was a treasured member of many ensembles in his time at SPX rising to the position of Concert Master of our College Orchestra. Tom also learnt guitar at school and was an enthusiastic student of Mr Stephen Cummins. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Tom and his family and friends.

Again good reports from our tutors and ensembles but I have reports from our Junior Bands of four students who have been working well.

Junior Concert Band = Harrison Hooper (Year 8) and Daniel Carroll (Year 7)

Junior Jazz Band = Nate Ho (Year 6) and Andrew Montano (Year 7)

Well done boys, keep up the good work. Well done also to Laura Power their conductor.

Drama Matters

Year 7 Drama task

Students in Year 7 were asked to create a Cartoon Chase scene that developed over 6-9 scenes. We have been researching Melodrama and the archetypes of Hero and Villain. The Chase Scene is a great way for students to develop their visual literacy and try to tell a story predominately through action. If we were in the classroom together, we would be exploring mime and exaggerated movement to help us with our melodrama style. Melodrama is the struggle of good vs evil with predominately stereotypical characters and an exaggerated style.

I have been blown away with the quality of the work submitted for this task. Many students took up the challenge to create stop motion animation or even filmed themselves and their family members on a chase! Many demonstrated exceptional skill at drawing and here are a few for you to enjoy.
