Languages Week

Languages Week started off with our multilingual assembly on Monday. Xiang Lan started off the assembly in Mandarin, followed by Itsuki Tomita and Yui Okada in Japanese and Patrick Quatermaine in Danish. Our guest speakers were Mr Matsue and Mr Talbot from the Consulate-General Office of Japan in Perth, and Ms Youngs-Lachmund, our Humanities teacher who speaks German.  Our guest speakers told us that the benefits of speaking several languages are not only speaking the language itself, but also the opportunity to broaden personal, social, cultural and employment opportunities.

In the classroom, Year One and Year Two had a go at “kirigami”, which is the combination of two actions “kiru – cut” and “oru – fold”.  Years One and Two students completed their task with a little help from Year Nine students. Their work is displayed in the Library until next week. Years Three to Year Five students have been busy making an origami photo frame. Years Six to Eight students have been working on their tie-dye project. Students were introduced to some interesting items for making patterns, such as chopsticks, marbles, paperclips, and so on. They will be dyeing their fabrics on Friday and finding out how their tie-dye methods worked.

I am looking forward to reporting on how the rest of the Languages Weeks went in next week’s Anchor
