TERM Three

PE and Sports News!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are staying healthy and active!

Just a few updates from me:

Term 3 - Week 8

Run/Walk Challenge around Australia

Wow the reception to this challenge has been amazing! When writing this we had already walked/ran together 1103.5km which means we have left Hobart, gone past Melbourne and not too far from Canberra. Let’s keep going everyone! Don’t forget to register your runs/walks here

The teacher walking/running the most so far goes to Mrs De Leo with 42km and our students that have covered the most distance so far is Georgia Powell in year 4 with 45km and Rose from year 2 not far with 44km.

Our year level leading the way is year 2 with a huge 334km. Well done!!

Well done to everyone that is getting out there, I look forward to seeing how much further we get after this week.

HPE Week Challenges

As Health and PE week is next week (Sept 1), I thought with at least another week to go at home I would make it a Mon-Thu Challenge week. I want to encourage all students to continue to get out there and be active and perhaps mix it up a bit for you.  This is a house competition any anyone that participates will get a point for their house and these will be used as bonus points towards Twilight Sports in term 4.

More information can be found when you click here but in summary there will be 5 challenges you can complete this week (an email has also been sent out to all of the students today)

Scavenger hunt out and about when on your walk

Scavenger hunt from home

Attendance at our PE lessons - we will mostly be focusing on fitness this week. In year 5 & 6 we have the students taking our sessions so watch out.

Our Walk/Run Challenge

Healthy Food Selfie - take a pic of your favourite meal (and share the recipe, I am always up for new foods to make) or maybe you would like to do some food art and share it with us

SSV Events

Unfortunately the EMR Cross Country that Lachie Gee was heading to has been cancelled due to current events.  We are super proud of what he was able to achieve and can’t wait to see how far he goes next year.

Any finals that were going to be held for Netball, AFL have also been cancelled this year.  They will now focus on ensuring that the Athletics goes ahead and all summer finals as mentioned previously.  We aim to run our Athletics for years 4-6 next term, so fingers crossed some sport can go ahead.

PE Classes

I have been so excited to see how many students have been attending our classes and how engaged they have been.

Prep - 2:

We have showed off our basketball skills, done some fitness bingo, scavenger hunts and some circuits using a deck of cards (the year 2’s exhausted me with their choice of exercises)

Years 3 & 4:

We have continued our unit on bowls and our students have been making videos of themselves.  We continued our target unit by introducing some hockey skills last week.  There are some great clinics and circuits they can practise at home.  You can find them here

Year 5 & 6

This week in year 5 Joseph Harvey, Ivy and Grace put the class through their paces with a tabata session (this is a session where we do an exercise for 20 seconds and 10 seconds rest over 4 minutes).  This week in year 6 Leroy taught the students his vast knowledge in karate and Ashlee Everett taught the students some of the exercises she does to help her with her hobby as a contortionist (if only I had a little bit of her flexibility).  I was super impressed with each student's planning and teaching.  I look forward to giving other students this opportunity in the future.

All year levels have continued to completed activities on nutrition, in particular what healthy lunch boxes look like, food advertising and nutrition panels and creating posters to convince students why they should eat well.  Parents, I think your children can come and help with the food shop now :)

I can't wait to see the students' involvement in our HPE Challenges this week!

Keep Safe. Keep Active

Physical Education Teacher and Sport Coordinator.

AUSLAN Update

Our Auslan Olympics:

Several levels across the school have been engaged in the Auslan Olympics as part of their Remote Learning. One particular activity 'The Cookie Challenge' has created some amusement for students trialing the challenge and for staff who have enjoyed viewing videos of some of the hilarious attempts!

The challenge required students to move a cookie from their forehead to their mouth, using only the muscles in their face. These are the same muscles that are regularly used in facial expressions to change the meaning of Auslan signs! Many children contacted me to share their funny photos, videos and stories. The success rate was very varied, ranging from biscuits falling to the floor, to crumbs in hairlines, to a hole-in-one. Whatever the case, I hope fun was had by all and that the biscuits were delicious - even if the 2 second rule applied! It was also fabulous to hear that some families turned 'The Cookie Challenge' into a family game. If you haven't yet, join in the fun!
