Volunteer Eligibility and Placements

1. Tertiary Placement Requirement

Volunteer placements at the school are limited to individuals currently enrolled in a recognised tertiary education program where the placement forms part of their course requirements.

The school is committed to supporting the development of the future education workforce and will prioritise placements for pre-service teachers and students undertaking Education Support Services (ESS) programs where possible.

All placement requests must be submitted via the Tertiary Placement Request Form available on the school website. Requests must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the proposed placement start date, excluding school holiday periods.

Applicants should allow up to two weeks for a response to enable appropriate review and consultation with relevant staff. Due to the high volume of placement requests received, the school may not be able to accommodate all applications.

Placement opportunities are subject to availability and depend on the school’s capacity to provide appropriate supervision, as well as operational demands and staffing capacity at different times throughout the school year.

2. Relevant Fields of Study

The school may consider placements for students undertaking tertiary studies in fields relevant to the educational, wellbeing, or therapeutic needs of students.

This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Teaching / Education
  • Education Support Services (ESS)
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Pathology
  • Mental Health or related wellbeing disciplines

Approval of placements in these or other relevant fields will depend on the school’s capacity to provide appropriate supervision and suitable learning opportunities.

3. Secondary School Work Placements

The school does not generally accept Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) or secondary school work experience placements.

This is due to the specialised nature of the school environment and the level of supervision, training, and professional knowledge required to safely support students.

In exceptional circumstances, secondary school placements may be considered at the discretion of the Principal, following consultation with relevant staff and School Council Consultation.

4. Conflict of Interest Declaration

All prospective volunteers must declare any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest prior to commencing their placement. This includes personal relationships with students or staff.

Where a conflict of interest is identified, the school will determine whether the placement can proceed with appropriate safeguards or whether the placement will be declined.

5. Principal Discretion

Approval of all volunteer placements is at the discretion of the Principal or their nominated delegate.

The school reserves the right to decline or discontinue a placement where it is determined that the arrangement is not in the best interests of the school, its students, or its staff.
