Grade 5 Snapshot-Term 3
Week 6&7
In writing during week 6, students focused on the writing process by writing biographies. They worked through the pre write, planning, drafting and revising stages. In week 7 they will edit and publish their writing using a program called Canva. They will then work on improving their Biography writing through a mini lesson with their class teacher. Students will then be challenged to write a biography with a partner.
During week 6, students have been looking at author's purpose. All good writer's need to have a purpose when they write. It could be to Persuade, Inform or Entertain the reader. This influences the way good writer's write as well as the reader. Students have been looking for evidence in factual and literary texts that support the author's purpose. This week is Book Week. The theme is 'OLD WORLD, NEW WORLD AND OTHER WORLDS’. Students will listen to an interview with David Walliams and participate in Book Week activities. On Thursday 26th August, students can dress up as their favourite character from a book.
During Week 6, students have been developing their understanding of fractions. The ski-runs have focused on comparing and ordering fractions, creating number lines, adding and subtracting fractions and solving real world problems with fractions. On Friday, as apart of our Technology Free Friday, students complete a range of fraction activities in their homes and gardens. These activities included creating fractions with objects in their house and using Lego and grid paper to get creative whilst learning about fractions. This week, students will continue to broaden their understanding of fractions by applying their knowledge to new fraction concepts.
During Week 6, students worked on their Summative Assessment for our inquiry into How We Organise Ourselves. Students were required to devise a plan on how we would set up a worm farm at BPS; including costs and the sale of the the worm juice. The top three proposals by students, will get an opportunity to further discuss their plans with Steve and Joel and work out how to put the plan into action.
