News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Parents and Families,

In Numeracy, we have  focused on the area and perimeter of rectangles and the area of triangles. We will begin our measurement portfolio task, where students will design a Community Space for the front of the school. This will include calculating the area and perimeter of the space, along with applying budgeting skills to find the cost of their designs.

In Literacy, students are finishing up with their narrative portfolio story. This has been a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in writing. In addition to this, both classes have been busy writing letters to their PenPals. 5/6A have been writing theirs to a school in Tasmania, while 5/6B’s PenPals are located near Bundaberg in Queensland.

The Year 5’s had their online NAPLAN practice tests last week. They all did very well and we are very proud of our students. The four NAPLAN tests will take place between 10- 20 May, week 4 of Term 2. Students will need headphones to assist them in completing  the tests.

Last week, the Marlborough Student Leaders went to the National Young Leaders Day at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The students had the opportunity to listen to Damien Flemming (cricketer), Cate Campbell (Olympic swimmer), Guy Edmands (actor/director/writer) and Lochie Smart (youngest pilot to fly around the world). Their messages were similar, to achieve your goals and dreams, you must work hard, demonstrate resilience and always persist.

If any parents or guardians are interested in participating in the organisation of the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony, we are planning to hold a meeting on Tuesday, April 5th at 6pm on Pippa Davis’ Webex. This will provide the opportunity to begin discussions about the ceremony and develop a committee for the event. If you are unable to attend the set meeting, there will be opportunities throughout the year.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

Pippa Davis and Nathan Baxter

What’s Happening in 3/4?

With the end of term fast approaching, we have been at 'Full steam ahead' in the 3/4 unit.

We have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes - new and exciting vocabulary such as side, angle, face, edge, vertex, curved surfaces - as well as where we find different polygons and polyhedra in the world. (If any of that sounded foreign to you, ask your resident expert to explain them to you and bring you into the learning journey!).

We are almost finished with reading and responding to Matilda and can't wait to have a movie day in the final week of term to celebrate our amazing learning!

Narratives, narratives, narratives... We have been working through the writing process to plan, draft, revise and edit our narratives - with the publishing to begin very shortly. Our aim is to have all students share their published works at a 3/4 Book Fair - where students will read each other's narratives and provide feedback based around the Positive, Improvement, Positive (PIP) strategy.

A friendly reminder that our second homework is due tomorrow, if you could please ensure it is in their bags before they go to bed tonight, that would be fantastic.

Have an amazing week!

Alec, Anna, Lisa and Pete

The Adventures of the 1/2's

Hello to our Grade 1/2 Families,

Wow, what a fun and certainly tiring Week 8 our students had! Many of our Grade 1’s & 2’s enjoyed a busy week of swimming where we reviewed water safety and learned some new swimming skills. We thank the wonderful parents and carers who volunteered their time to support the students and staff at the pools.

Over the past two weeks in Numeracy students continued to build their knowledge on features of shapes, revise and practice their subtraction strategies and continued building their place value knowledge; understanding the value of a number changes depending on its position. In week 10, students will apply their Numeracy knowledge through a range of fun, tactile and engaging math games. This provides students with multiple exposures to the skills covered over Term 1, and supports their development of mathematical problem solving and reasoning skills.

In Writing over the past fortnight students have continued working on their letter formation, writing letters to loved ones and editing their own work for correct spelling, punctuation and capitals in the right places! Students will continue to practice their handwriting, editing skills, and phonetic spelling of tricky words throughout week 10 as we write recounts using sequencing language..

In Reading each week students are enjoying reading good-fit-books to themselves and a partner. We are learning new vocabulary words each week and looking ‘beyond the text’ to build up our worldly knowledge. In week 8 we enjoyed learning about wombats, and in Week 10 we look forward to learning more about Easter and the Easter Bunny! We will explore making predictions about a text and build on our comprehension strategies through retelling the story. We continue to develop our Phonics knowledge through our daily verbal phonics program.

Over the past two weeks students also enjoyed practicing body percussion, they are working hard on making music with their bodies to the rhythm of the music. Students have also enjoyed refining their fine motor skills during our craft activity where we cut, coloured, and pasted together wombats and platypus! We will also finish the first phase of our Friendology program which has been a wonderful learning experience for students, whereby students have gained many strategies to help form new friendships and to self manage and put out ‘friendship fires’!

As we look towards winding down for the term in anticipation of our Term 1 school holidays we wish all our wonderful 1/2 families a very happy and safe Easter break, and commend all our students on their incredible effort and wonderful start to the 2022 school year!

Warm Regards,

The 1/2 teaching team,

Helen Edwards, Anies Davidson & Adam Jarvis.

Exciting times in the Foundation room

Everyone had a great time swimming last week, and we are so grateful to the parents who volunteered their time to join us at the pool and assist students in changing - THANK YOU once again. We are so proud of how well the children adapted to a new routine and demonstrated some excellent resilience and responsibility. We still have a small collection of items left behind from the swimming program, so if you are missing something please have a look at the lost property, and swimming lost property boxes in the ELC.

In the next two weeks, we are continuing many of our learning goals and seeing great progress. Key areas for Literacy include letter recognition including capital and lower case letter matching, forming letters correctly using a range of manipulatives and story sequencing. We have also launched our phonemic awareness program and the students are really enjoying the hand actions (and some funny sound effects!) that go with this program. We are primarily focusing on hearing if words rhyme, and isolating the beginning or ending sound of a word. In Mathematics we are continuing on our number recognition and formation, counting small groups, continuing patterns, and collecting simple data. We have also started working on recognising and drawing simple 2D shapes such as circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. Many students find it difficult to 'see' the difference between a square and a rectangle so this could be a great area to support your child at home.

School Contributions for 2022

Using the forms sent home last month you can choose to pay by Credit Card at the office, BPay (details on the form) or Direct into the bank account.  If you pay via BPay or Direct into bank please return the forms (both pages please showing all contributions that you may choose to pay) to the office or scan and email to marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au so we are able to reconcile your payment.  You can also pay via Compass.  You can find this in the Payment Centre on the home page.

Please note that you may see in the payment section at the bottom of the page that you have an unallocated funds credit.  This may be because you had a credit from a cancelled excursion or something similar.  If you would like to use this credit, then you need to process this first by removing the amounts prepopulated in the Curriculum Contributions box and just adding the amount of the credit and then clicking on the process button.  The curriculum contributions will then show the amount less the credit applied, and you can continue with your payment.  If you wish to donate the credit amount, then an alternative option is to process your payment first and then add the credit amount to one of the donation areas and processing this. If you require any assistance, please contact the office 9870 3468 or email marlborough.ps@education.vic.gov.au
